Mixing and Mastering.
Heres an acoustic number i recorded a bit back and have just remastered it. Listening back this master sounds ten time better than the last. Thats one year of mastering experience more i have gained.
The song was recorded on a nice Takamine Satana and is called
"SO DISTANT"

Im looking for any feedback. Production and musicality. Cheers.

Good songwriting. The ac gtr, when it's doing the 8th/16th note strumming sounds excellent. It has the effect of the guitar in the room, maybe being played a little too hard for the action ht, but that gives it an effective percussion effect anyway. Ac gtr sounds really hot at 2:00 as I'm writing. I think the bass would sound better if there was something in its upper harmonics coming through to make it articulate more. The instrumentation of the intro sounds a bit out of sorts and rhythmically disjointed compared to the straight ahead rhythm gtr that comes in later. A similar passage happens later in the piece. The vocals are great, though the intonation is a little off here and there. But that seems to fit the mood of the song. The background vocals are well written and support the main line. I liked the solo guitar part at the ending.

Thanks alot Timothy. What part do you mean when you say 8th/16th note strumming ( give us a time)?
I totally agree with you on the bass guitar. It was recorded direct into my Boss BR1180 and i didnt add enough mids/hi mids.
I have to disagree with you on the rythmic disjointed statement though. It is quite an odd rythym, a funk bass line with a tight acompanying rythym guitar. The part you might be conserned about is the lead guitar part over the bass and rythym, but i feel that it totally works. It is a bit different and might no be the tightest lead performance.

That was me singing and i cant sing, it took me about 5 hours to track the vox!!! The bak vox were chili peppers (bob dylan also maybe?) influenced as with the bass guitar. There is one part where i sing the minor (1:20s) when it sounds like it should be the major, but it works (kinda!).
Cheers for the kind words Timothy.

Only cause i put me straight down by doing all those replies.
Cheeky monkey!

there is a tinny quality here that makes it sound like it was tracked with a dynamic mic.

I would say that this could be because of the player and instrument too.

He sounds like hes bashing the shit outta that guitar.

Yip i was! I used a "Realistic Electret" mic. Bet youv never heard of them! Thats because they are shite and really cheap. The Takamine Santa FE has quite a high tinny sound. I had to bash the guitar to get any sort of level going into my Boss BR1180 because of the mic. The mic was right up at the guitar aswell!

I think it sounds ok considering it was recorded on a homestudio Boss Br1180 and i did it in my tiny odd shaped bad acoustic bedroom with a shitty mic. Not anywhere close to a pro mix at all though.
Cheers.
