Anybody hear of em?

http://www.thomann.de/index.html?partner_id=97926&page=ie/the_tbone_dc1500_drummikrofonset.htm

I'm curious about micing a kit - I know the question I'm asking has been asked many times before, and I ahve no wish to be verbally sodomized but the search function aint a workin'. So....

General concensus: Roll your own drum mic kit or buy the likes of said T Bone kit or this samson one:

Or should I just o with an AKG D112 and an SM57 with my naiant MS 2s?

I would advise against the T bone mics. I bought two of the sm57 knock offs and they were nothing like an sm57 and both really different from each other.
I did a test on this board, search around for it, something like sm57 versus chinese knock off or t bone mb75 . Can't remember exactly but have a go :)

T Bone is a line of Chinese mics rebadged by Thomann. If you're in Europe (or elsewhere in the EU, probably), they're a decent source for the Chinese mics. If you're anywhere else, you can probably get them cheaper from any number of other companies.

Basically, search for posts about the equivalent Nady models and you'll get a good picture.

the tbone tom/snare mics look just like the ones CAD sells actually....

I've got a few t.bones, and for the price they seem pretty decent. I have 2x SC300, 1x bd300, 3x mb75, and 4 mb85 beta.

I've not A/Bd them with anything, but on their own, i like the sound. And i do have experince with other mics, at college.

The SC300 is just £20, and although it ain't great on everything, especially vocals, they do a decent job as overheads. I like the MB75(£25) on snare, and the BD300(£35) seemed alright on kick, although when i used it i was having problems with tuning so wasn't focussed on the sound i was getting from the mic, and I haven't been able to record since.

For £100 for the set of 4, I think it's pretty decent.

I haven't recorded with the MB85, but I've used them with my PA, and I much prefer them to my old Behringer mics. I've used the rest with my PA, with decent results.

However, if I were you, I'd use your naiants for overheads, and get a shure beta 52 and sm57 for kick and snare. And if you want tom mics, you could get a few of the t.bone CD55s(£20 each).

A drummer i know bought one to mic his snare with and it broke within days - I then let him use my genuine 57 and he said he couldnt believe how better it made his recordings. The Tbone also needed much more pre gain applied to it which meant it was alot noisier than the real deal too.

Thomann is a really good site but I don't think I'd buy a Tbone... nevertheless you may get lucky like elementary said.

Probably the same mic or very nearly so. CAD also rebadges Chinese mics in their line. The rebadgers that I can think of are Nady, CAD, MXL, Cascade, Apex, and Karma. There are probably others.

Note: by calling them rebadgers, that doesn't necessarily mean that their mics are identical to other mics that look similar, though. The manufacturers in China do routinely make changes for a sufficiently large run. However, they will usually be similar.

Cool, I'll avoid the t bone slike a bizarre woman eating plague. Next question: Are there any decent drum mic kits? I'm thinking of buying a pair of Studio Projects C4s because I can use 'em on guitar too, so yeah I guess an AKG or Sure Beta and 57 would be a good plan.

What do you want to be able to record (i.e. individual toms, oh's and kick, etc?)

I usually use a kick, snare and 2 OH's,and for that you can buy by the peice and get some good all purpose mics, but if you want to record more than that, I think I would look at some of the Audix kits.

Well I think for now bass, snare and overheads would be fine. Does adding other mics froma different 'range' mess with the sound? Or could I just throw some more shure dynamics on the toms as time goes by?

I have never had probs with mixing and matching, within reason (same mic for OH pair, all toms the same, etc.)

I am a fan of the Beta 52 on kick, also the D2 from Audix, but I mostly use my old AT pro 25 thanks to a reccomendation from this board about 4 years ago. It really fits into the mix well in my situation.

For snare I like the Audix I-5, but a 57 is fine too.

I usually use my ADK SC1's for OH, but I have used the SP B1 in pairs and gotten great results. Actually, the B1 is my go to mic for hi hat and tambourine.

I have always been impressed with the Sennheiser e609 silvers on toms. The I-5 does well too.

That being said, I usually prefer the "less is more" approach, and with a good kick and snare and good room, I am usually pretty pleased with the result. I guess the hodgepodge of different brand mics never really bothered me.

YMMV, but I hope this helps.

I wouldn't totally avoid them. As i said, my experience is good. But if you can afford a better mic, go for it. :D If you fancy a lot of mics to play around with, t.bone may be up your street. I'm gonna buy a few decent mics, then a bunch more t.bone to play around with. If they're shit, it don't matter, I've not wasted too much money. If they're good, GREAT!

Agreed. I'd probably avoid the T.Bone line in dynamics, though.

Also, if you're in the EU, you can probably get better deals on ADK than we can on our side of the pond. I'd take a good long look at their offerings before buying anything from China.

I spoke with Larry from ADK recently and it's just become a hair more difficult getting ADK over here in the UK - they've just lost TurnKey as their supplier. The best route I've found for getting gear is either to drop JP Gerard a mail (he's based in Belgium and has some stocks of things - just search for him on the ADK forum) or buy from eBay US - it worked out about 3/4 the cost for me to buy mics from the US, including shipping, tax etc. - all in. I can't recommend ProAudioToys (I think that's who it was - Greg was the feller I spoke to) highly enough.

I've got a couple dynamics too. These seem preetty decent. I like the MB85 beta, it feels looks and sounds good. A lot better than my old Behriger XM8500s, which i know it's a great comparison, but it's all I've had to compare, and the t.bones are hugely better.
