hello

I'm buying a synth to flesh out some of my mainly acoustic recordings and really not sure where to start. Firstly, i can't play so i ain't gonna spend a lot.

Secondly, i can only offer a couple of recordings as guides to the type of sounds i'm after. I love the synth on Flaming lips 'yoshimi battles....' album and also some of the stuff on Becks 'mutations'.

I'd also love to be able to do slightly bizzare sci-fi effects.

I know i'm not helping much but there goes. My limit is £150 and i suppose my realm will be second hand e-bay.

Are there any key words i should be looking for in the descriptions? Heres a couple i'm looking at....would they be any good? If you could tell me why they would or wouldn't that would be ace.

Thanks very much

Mark

The trouble with the Poly 61 and the Juno 60 is that they're both pre-midi and thus incapable of interfacing with much of the modern world...

You are on the right track with the Korg DW6000, but not (IMHO) with the CZ1000.

My recommendation would be to save up a little more dosh and get something modern - like, brand new - that will serve your needs for years. I'm a fan of the Flaming Lips, not much of Mr. Beck, so I know the sound you're looking for pretty well and you will need to spend about twice that much on something like this.

Casio who!?

Just playing man personally I do not like Casio because of their usually cheezy sounds however cool tune.

ya i had the same approach, but it cant get too cheesy because with all the different waveforms and envelopes you can add to it.
presets sound like crap, but when you play with them and add different things i think they sound awesome.

Poly-61 was available as Poly-61M model too w/ MIDI :) Hard too find but worth it either way. And if you get a non-midi model, you can always do like everyone else in history did before MIDI...actually play the instrument :D
