styrofoam on the studs

if i take a 1" thick sheet of styrofoam and cut it in 2" strips....then glue the strips of styrofoam to the studs (so the sheet rock for the walls will only be touching the styrofoam). will this help soundproof (will it be worth the effort in other words)?

sure that'll work... at least until the styrofoam come apart and the wall collapses on you. take some styrofoam sometime and crumble it in your hand... do you really want to trust that stuff to hold up a wall?

I think what you want here are some resilient channels to hang your sheetrock onto. they're not very expensive.
