i'm in the process of having a (2) car garage size building constructed 30'x28' and all i want to put into it is the live room for recording, and the control room for mixing. does anyone have any good ideas on what room size should be proportioned to the other? in other words what would be an acoustically sound size room for the control room, and what would be the best way to lay it out? i also plan on putting a window between the two rooms probably 5' x 3' ! any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! any drawings or diagrams would be even better!!! thanks, gregg!

Gregg,

Yes, there are good shapes and bad shapes. See the Acoustics FAQ, second in the list on my Articles page:

www.ethanwiner.com/articles.html

Read the section about room modes, and also the sidebar that describes the ModeCalc program you can download to try out different dimensions.

If you get EQ magazine, the Septmember 2004 issue has plans for a properly designed all-in-one control room and studio. You can adapt those plans for your control room. If you don't get EQ, that article is now on my company's site, linked under my name below.

Hello Ethan, I am a little confused about your Minitraps. Are your Minitraps resistance absorbers or membrane absorbers? Thanks

They're actually a hybrid of both types. But they're closer to a "resistive" absorber than to a wood panel membrane trap.
