i'm curious about the TB1... is anybody using one of these? I noticed that the older model TB1 was in a casing about the size of the b1 and now it's about the size of the C1. I was wondering if there are any major changes.

Actually, the new TB1's are in the case size of the T3. It now comes with the shock mount and the larger case. Many people comment on the TB1 as thier favorite. Marty Peters from Mix Magazine liked it the best, and he actually purchsed it.

The TB1 is warm, airy and not as colored as the T3. There are many other tube mics out there for less, but the TB1 is well worth its price as the quality and sound are better IMHO.

No. Absolutely not

I'm a complete outsider here, and a fan of SP products in general. I also have to say there is nothing that DJL wrote here that is unreasonable or untrue. I think SP doth protest too much, and does a deservice to it's reputation and products to engage in the kind of name calling we've seen here.

Your mics are not for everyone. Period.
A C1 is *not* as accurate as an 87. Period.

This doesn't make it a bad mic.

wow krs,

that was nice as hell of you to join HR.COM just to say that......hell of a guy you are......

The "Studio Projects" thread has been pretty tame, compared to some other threads in the past. I got into it with Alan in the "Alan Hyatt" thread. It's all pretty silly, really.

This has nothing to do with SP mics. You obviously haven't been around here long. Alan Hyatt Hatfield and DJL McCoy have been going at it for several years, as a result of family grievances that started over 100 years ago. Most of the family have let bygones be bygones, but these two will fight it out to the bitter end.

You can read all about it here:

I tend to respond when I perceive misinformation. Excuse me for having an opinion.

It's good you have your opinion. Many here have a similar opinion. Be careful though, if you opine too much that a U87 trumps a C1, you'll wake up Alan, and then he'll post and yell at you.

what misinformation?

That a C1 is as good or better mic than an 87. I judge a mic on it's accuracy, not it's usefulness in some applications. Shure would never make this type of ludicrous statement about their products, despite the fact they have an arsenal of awesome, useful microphones. It's about responsible marketing.

Sorry to keep this going, I'm really happy you love your C1, I love mine too. (But please just don't tell me it's as accurate as an 87:))

I do hope, in the interests of "responsible marketing", that you aren't including the Mexican SM57 in that assessment of Shure's merits :p

I think that's a different thread :)

krs,

I'd be interested in your definition of accuracy as that is very much a blanket statement. One which I feel may have a few moth holes in it.

Apologies for having sounded so dogmatic about this. Transient reponse on acoustic sources, across the spectrum, and granted, that is a subjective, "ears only" evaluation. Maybe you have the holy grail C1 that I haven't heard. That is entirely possible.

No need to get upset guys. This is just my opinion. I do stand by my original assertion, from my experience. Maybe we can agree to disagree.

If you've tried both mics side by side then I have no problem with your assessment.

How do you think the C1 sounds outside the context of any Neumann comparisons?

Thanks for the kind words... and don't worry, if they put too much heat on you for posting your opinions... I'll put my flame proof suit back on and jump in and take the heat for you. :)

Yes I have AB'ed these guys awhile back. I remember it being closer than you might think:)

Really very good. Especially considering the price.
