Hey DOT, thanks for the review. Always valuable. Always appreciated.

What would help me even more is any comparison you could make with well-functioning Octava mc012's. I'm your typical cheap-ass, low end home recordist trying to get a million dollar sound for $1,000. The Octava's are my only good small diameter frame of reference. Any thoughts? Or, will you include the Octava in the Listening Sessions?
Maybe the Octava MC-012 and the Marshall MXL603S.

Alan, if the shock mount (which I know you'll fix) is the only bummer with the C4... you hit another home run. :)

I don't know if this has been covered but, How does the selector switch work? Can you use the hi-pass and the pad at the same time? The way they are all in one switch makes it look like it's one or the other....

Thanks

You can only use the pad or the Hi-Pass at one time, you can not use them together. Again, we went for a competitive priced set of mics.

Next year, we will introduce a new higher costing line of microphones called the E-Series. The small diaphragms in that series will have mulitple pads, and multiple filters set at different frequencies, along with other goodies we can't reveal right now. They will target at about $799.00 for the matched pair, but the E series will be aimed at a higher priced market. There will be 6 or 7 models in the E-Series, but that is a long way off....

I did not design the C4 i just helped Brent with the testing of the Mic along the way.

I really dont know to much about the product line but im learning as i go along. But from the tests that we did it sounded very good to me.

"We went for a competitive priced set of mics."

Can I hear an amen! I will put up with a lot of inconvenience if I can get quality sound in my price range. Its all about sound. Hell, I'll put t.p. in the shock mount if it'll hold a mic that gives me great tone! Although I really appreciate Alan solving this problem. I'd hate to drop a good mic.

Thanks Alen:

I was just wondering how the switching was set up.

Thanks for the reply

shortyprs and DJL, both the Oktava MC012's and the MXL 603's will be included. The list of mics is here and is updated often with more mics.

We're recording a Small Condenser Mic CD over the next couple of weeks, and most of the small condenser mics on the market will be on the CD.

Will Harvey get a set? I am sure at some point he will.

Aaaarrrggghh, no!!!! Please, no more!! Wait till I get all this other stuff shipped back to you. (I REALLY am working on getting it all boxed up to send back to you, Alan.)

Relax Harvey....I said at "some point". Once you get me the other stuff, we will work on getting you a set.

Hey, good luck in your new headphone Venture!!!

No need to box anything up Harvey.
Alan just said it's O.K. for me to pick them up and "borrow" them for a while (heh, heh).

Hey, somebody's gotta keep all us bottom-feeders happy.
As far as the "Venture", it consists mainly of getting a few cases of these things from the distributor, putting them in boxes and running them down to the post office every day. I don't think it will ever pay for a trip to Tahiti - Austin, maybe, someday.

Jarrod, I like your honesty... I wish you'd post here more often. :) I'd like to hear more about the testing you guys did and stuff.

Well, I've got a lot of faith. I'm planning on selling off a factory matched pair (Sound Room) Oktava MC012's and buying a pair of C-4's just for the bass cuts.-Richie

That is an attractive feature, Richie. It'd be nice to use with my RNP on an acoustic and cut that low end rumble.

Or, just work on mastering your mic placement. At some point in time I will most likely get a pair of C4's to see how I like them or not... however, I won't be selling my Oktava MC-012's.

Sorry, DJL, my placement is just fine, but it still won't equal a 180khz bass rolloff. Generally, with a C414, I cut one band with the mic, and cut whatever frequency band I'm not cutting with the 414 with the variable bass filter on the Avalon. For overheads and remote spaced stereo recording, the Oktavas rock. I've just nevver gotten the sound out of them on acoustic that I wanted. They are, however, really cool on recorder and violin. The truth is, I need a high pass filter.-Richie

Well, I must admit the Oktava MC-012's haven't been my favorite acoustic guitar type mic's either... but, as drum overheads they do rock. I love the MXL603S on acoustic instruments, and they have become some of my favorite mic's. I've found that if you use the right mic on something you really don't need to tweak the EQ much, if any at all. Please let me know your opinion of the C4's after you get them and had a chance to burn them in.

Interesting DJL. Somewhere I read someone compare the mc012 and the 603, so I didn't give them a second thought, since I have the mc012's. You reaaly hear a difference on acoustics. I love the mc012's as drum overheads, but sometimes have to really work on placement and eq to get the right acoustic guitar sound.

Yea, I like the MC-012's for overheads, and the MXL603's on acoustic guitar.

That would be me, when I compared them several years ago. The 603's were very similar to my Sound Room matched MC012's at the time of the test. The newer versions of the 603's seem to have a little brighter sound.
