Studio projects C1..or anything else?

I've been hearing so much about these C1's (all good things, till now).

I have a very humble setup right now. My main microphone is dynamic (shure SM 58) with an Audio buddy (M audio) mic pre.
I'll be using the mic mainly for vocal.

Is the SP C1 a good upgrade? Would I get drastic results?
 
Have you considered the AT 4033SE. I also have a SP C-1 and I think that for $75 more the AT is a better all around mic.

One more good reason to get a C1

The C1 is selling for $199 at macmidimusic.com and bayviewproaudio.com

That's a great price.!... I have ordered mine from macmidimusic!
 
I don't know anything about C1 except what I read, but I use C3 and it is a lovely, though somewhat unforgiving vocal mic. It will make you sound the way you sound, not better than you sound. Expect a learning curve if the thing is anything like C3 (and I'm assuming it is). It's a lot more sensitive than a dynamic, and will amplify nervous movements, creaky joints, breathing, everything. However, it is not just an upgrade to the quality of recordings, but a tool you need to learn to use if you want to be a recording vocalist or an engineer. I think it would be an excellent choice for your first condenser.-Richie

I disagree....

The 4033 is not an upgrade to the C1, they are two totally different sounding mics....

I'd say if you have both of them you can cover quite a few applications... many times a vocalist that did not sound good with a C1 sounded great with the 4033 and vice versa, so actually having both would complement your mic library quite well....
 
I like the ADK stuff, which is in competition with Studio Projects. You can check out 8thstreet on adk mics. They are great.

Blue Bear is right.
I tested the C1 and the 4033 and they sounded quite different on my vocals.
The C1 definitely worked better.

I was in a similar situation, but I had only a SM57 and upgraded to a C1. It was a huge difference in sound, a lot better of course. I haven't used other LD mics but IMHO for $230 that the C1 costed me, it was a great bang for the buck!

sorry, from a sm58 to a C1 wont be "drastic"....it will be an improvent, a decent improvement.......
 
I was in a similar situation. I'd only been using an SM58 for vocals. I bought the C1 and a Presonus Blue Tube mic preamp and to me, the difference was drastic. With the SM58, the vocals I've recorded seems to have a plastic sheet over them in comparison to the C1.

The one problem I have is the sibilants ("esses"). At least for me, the tracks required more de-essing which can be tricky.

have you tried the SM58 into the Blue Tube pre?

what were you using as a pre before the BT?

I went from a sm57 into my old 4 tracks pres to a sm57 into a Delta DMP2 and that was night and day...drastic.....

then went from the sm57 to a Marshall MXLv67 (similar sounding to the C1) and the difference was noticable, but not drastic....
 
riffing, you might want to try positioning the SM58 at "eye level"
pointing down towards your mouth-that'll cut down on
sibilance.

BTW, a pro level mic pre can turn a SM58 or SM57 (even more so)
into a tiger! Gidge's experience seems typical.

Another reason to consider the Studio Projects line is the excellant support offered by Alan Hyatt.He stands behind his products like no other distributor that I've seen.

Yup, Queue, you're correct. Thanks for the tip, chessparov, as I'll try tilting the C1 down.
