Hi folks. I just wanted to get some individual opinions on what you guys considered to be absolute studio necessities. This includes everything from sound proofing to amps, rack gear, and software. Thanks to those who bother with this list.

ampeg

well for recording bass you definitely need an ampeg tube head, preferably vintage. also, pro tools! but that should go without saying.

An awesome couch. I have one made of blue sparkle Kustom tuck n roll. Holds the whole room together.

You are really going to have to answer this question for yourself im affraid. Just know that as much absorption and bass trapping as possible. Where and how much you need depends on your budget and room setup.

Monitors are a given but mean nothing if you dont get your room sounding right.

Figure out your room dimensions and what neccesities you NEED and thats how you will answer most of your questions. You will need a interface if your going the PC/MAC way. Number of ins/outs depends on your needs. A good mic and good preamp will get you far in your quest. Which mic/preamp combo is usually not the same for needs so some experimenting is needed to see what sound you want to accomplish.

and yes a lava lamp.

well some good mics for starters, but a good all around tough mic as you may know the wonderful sm57 $100.00 good vocal mic. but that should be something you pick. and a lava lamp! :) Good luck

Something to capture sound, something to store the captured sound on. Something to play the sound back on.:D

If I were to start over from scratch. Room treatment would be the first priority. I never want to try to record or mix in an untreated room again!

If you would, what are the basic steps to decent treatment on a budget? Also, does firewire/ usb have better fidelity than PCI?

Lots of good advice on treatment if you search this forum.

The general rule for the type of room most home studios are built in is bass trapping and lots of it. I I built my bass traps out of fiberglass board and burlap with wood frames. I used Roxul rockboard 60 another common material is Owens Corning 703. Search for DIY bass traps for tons of info.

Another important piece is building a reflection free zone around your monitoring position. Search for reflection free zone or rfz for tons of info.

Excellent info here: http://www.realtraps.com/articles.htm

There is no real difference in fidelity between firewire PCI and USB but people generally lean towards either PCI or firewire.

Headphones and a headphone amp are important for tracking. If you have a separate control room and tracking room, then you want to set up some way to communicate between rooms.

Mic stands and cables... These 2 things are easy to forget about but add up fast.

Also don't forget about backup hard drives!
