Studio monitors vs monitor headphones

Hey guys, I have a question
Right now, headphones or monitor speakers i need a pair...maybe around 200$
I know that mixing and mastering on headphones isnt the ideal thing to do. If i were to get them i would get the audio technica ath m50 because of all the great reviews that ive seen..(any other headphones?) If i were to get the speakers instead maybe the m audio studiophile av40s? BUT with studio monitor speakers, I have to factor in my acoustic treatment, which right now isnt that great. So my question is should i just get headphones instead of the speakers because of my situation right now with acoustic treatment..or just get the studio monitor speakers??

When it comes down to it, you really don't have a choice -- I shouldn't say that... If you want anything even reasonably listenable, you need reasonably accurate and consistent monitoring in a reasonably accurate and consistent space.

Covering (isolating) your ears with headphones that will drastically change response depending on how long ago you drank a glass of water ---- Everything sounds great in headphones. That's (one of so many reasons) why it doesn't work.
