Strange problem using CD as an input

Can anyone help on this. I'm perplexed.

I've created a backing track using Band In A Box. This has a piano solo on it at one point.

I've saved that as a midi file and then turned the midi into an mp3 and burned it to a CDR disk.

I can now play the CD in my CD players, including my portable CD player, and hear everything, including the solo, perfectly.

Next step is to put it into my Fostex MR8 HD.

I connected a stereo lead from the Line Out in my portable CD player, and put it in input A (Unbal).

I then recorded it to track 3.

However, the piano solo is not there. I think I can hear it extremely faintly (and I mean extremely) in the background but thats about it.

If I play the CD again just using the CD's headphones all is well on the CD itself.

But whenever I record that CD into the MR8 then the solo disappears.

Does anyone have any idea why this might be? I'm new to all this stuff and am very quickly out of ideas.

Many thanks

Al

Hi Track,

Can you explain further?

How do I fix the problem.

Like I say I can hear the track via the MR8, just not all of it.

What do I need to do to get it right, and why would it being an MP3 be an issue.

If I wrote a WAV directly to the disk would that solve it?

Thanks

Al

Sounds like you're only sending one half of a stereo mix to your machine if you're only using one track. Try switching the leads and the solo will probably be there but other stuff will disappear. Then you'll know if the signal is stereo or not. If it is, you'll have to use two tracks, or pan everything to center if you can (never used band in a box so I'm not sure what the options are).

Why an MP3 file? I think if you produced a WAV file you could import it directly, but I'm not an MR8 user!

The MR-8 will only read .wav files that are 16 bit, 44.1khz, or 16 bit, 22.05khz. I doubt very much that you imported an MP3 to the MR-8 and listened to it.

Hi gang

I'm not importing it directly to disk. Although that may be an easier option.

I've turned the midi file into a wav file I think, and then wrote that as an audio CD. Then i've now got my CD player sorted so I can hear the piano solo (thanks for the mono stereo tip).

But I've now encountered another problem unrelated.

The "Post Recording Please Wait...." message doesn't ever stop.

I've had this prob before when recording with vocals or instruments and the Fostex crashes an awful lot.

Is it possible to transfer a wav file directly to it without having to play the CD into the input?

Nb:

Alun:
. . .and don't forget that the WAV file may have to be in the mono format. If your current WAV file is stereo, you'll have to split it into two (L/R) mono WAV files.
