Strange Issue with Tascam DM24 Mixer

All of a sudden my microhone, a Rode NT 2, began to sound like crap, distorted, as if it were some cheap Radio Shack mic that had been dropped on the ground. I discovered that there was something wrong with the mixer, not the mic. But, the strange thing is that if the channel link is set to link up the channel with its neighbor as a stereo coupling, the sound is normal. It only sounds terrible if the channel is a stand alone. I am routing the mic through a pre amp and using the XLR on the channel (it can be any channel). I have ruled out any issues with dynamics. My routing settings have not changed, but I checked them and they appear to be right.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem might be?

Here is the I/O

DM24 I/O Ch1-16 Tab has Ch1-8 "patched" to M/L 1-8 respectively and the Return set to A:TDIF1 Trk1-8.
DM24 I/O Ch 1-16 Tab has Ch 9-16 "patched" to TDIF2 1-8 respectively and the Return set to B:TDIF Trk1-8
DM24 I/O Output Tab shows the following:

Output Signal section:
Buss1-8/Direct1-8 points to TDIF1 Trk1-8
Buss1-8/Direct9-16 points to TDIF2 Trk1-8

I looked at pg 92. I believe it was about machine control. The board should be grounded.
