Stereo RCA to external mic jack?

Hello,

I currently record from my 4-track to an external dual cassette deck (RCA inputs). Unfortunately the tape deck has passed after 10 yrs. of excellent service. My question is; would I be able to purchase a small hand held cassette recorder and send the stereo output of the 4-track w/ adapter (2 rca to 1/8") into the external mic jack of the cassette recorder?

Of course I can just purchase another dual cassette w/ RCA's, but I thought I'd ask as this would save quite a bit of $. Would the audio quality suffer terribly?

Those hand held things are mono (most of the time) and, most likely, have a compressor for level control. This is the opposite of what you want. I can't imagine anything cheaper than a cassette deck at Best buy for $75 (if you can find one there.

You obviously have a computer, why don't you mix down to that. There is free software that will allow you to do that and burn it to CD.

I was considering the hand held just for portability. I'd like to record into my computer so that I could easily burn cd's, but my rec. setup is in another part of the house. Thanks for the comment about mono, that would wreak havoc on a nice mix w/ mult. instruments panned L/R.

A fun "toy" to consider for what you want to do is one of the small portable karokee machines. Some of them have stereo ins and outs and some have fairly decent recorders. Memorex makes one which is only about 15'X12'X7'deep with a good recorder which might serve your purposes quite well.

what exactly do you mean (or what exictly are you trying to point out/highlight) when 'characterizing' your dual cassette deck as external. External in relationship to what? And why do you even need to mention it?

Side notes:
A. If the sound quality of recordings on your 4-track is terrible and you don't care much about it, then you may not notice the difference.
B. If the sound quality of the recordings on your 4-track is excellent, then you would not have a such idea nor ask a such question to begin with.

so, my guess, your situation most likely falls into category A., unless you have made up the whole story, which would logically fall into category C, but there's no such category in the list above. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.... go figure
