You can always use two mike stands with booms and get any config you want. Sometimes that's easier.

That has always worked for me.

I got mine from Naiant, $15 plus shipping.
Me, too! I'm just about to put my drum overheads (MXL 603s) on it for this weekend's session! I'm also gonna set up some MSH-1s as room mics.

Solid titanium?

That's nice.

But it doesn't do anything that's worth +$600 to me. I can just setup 2 mic stands in an A/B setup, or whatever.

I don't care if it's made out of pure gold. Something to allow you to setup a basic stereo mic setup is not worth $600 to me.

Obviously, not everyone needs an expensive mike bar. Bear in mind that a pair of DPA mikes costs about $4000 new. The DPA and AEA bars are precisely crafted, versatile, and save a lot of time for a number of applications. That time has a value. They also make it easier to reproduce the same configuration quickly and accurately.

They allow very secure mounting with high quality, easily adjustable mike positioners. The one meter bars make it easy to do A-B stereo with a pair of omnis, along with all the near coincident and coincident positionings, too. They have precision markings for separation, including specific markings for common arrangements like ORTF, saving the time of measuring. The positioners have markings for angle. You can also quickly and easily mount two LDCs or other big, side address mikes vertially with capsules together for coincident techniques. You can't do that with a cheap bar. The bars can be mounted on a stand, or suspended from wires to fly over a recording space.

If you need all these qualities (secure mounting, speed of set up, reproducibility, wide versatility of positionings), the AEA bars, at least, are reasonably priced. If you don't, they would be an extravagance.

Cheers,

Otto

$614!!!!!!! Jesus H. Christmas!

Now, here's a stupid question. On my stereo bar, I have the knobs that screw into the bar on each side from below and screw into the mic clips. However, I am too stupid to get them to adjust at all so they are tight and point in the direction of my choosing. The clips just tighten down until are tight against the bar, in whatever position that happens to be, and I can turn the knob CW or CCW, and it doesn't tighten or loosen the clip. What's the deal? Maybe I should put some rubber washers in there or something... I realize how stupid this sounds, but I honestly can't get this to work.

By the way, Tae, has myhatbroke hit on you yet?

Edit - I think this is the one I have. The problem seems to be that the knobs/screws are actaully threaded through the bar, so turning them raises or lowers the screw and clip together, instead of having the screw float loosely in the bar. Stoopit, I tells ya.

I have one of these- works great!

I don't believe it. ;) Is it as I describe - threaded through the bar? - if so, how can you possibly adjust the clips and tighten them into position? it's impossible, I swear. I'm pretty dumb, perhaps, but not too stupid to properly work a mic stand and mic clip, honestly. I know this isn't "user error."

If all you want is a little stereo holder for XY and near coincident patterns in a horizontal orientation with end address mikes, Wes Dooley sells this thing for $20:

The whole description is about half way down on this page:

http://www.wesdooley.com/aea/Microphone_Array_Positioners.html

You would probably also want to get some of the "wide locking rings" down at the bottom of the page to help secure the mikes at the proper angle more easily.

Cheers,

Otto

If you're recording live concerts and the setup has to look good or be unobtrusive, that's a different thing.
+1 to mic stands...

I know what you mean. I bought that same one for 3.99 or whatever. Practically free.

Anyways, what I did is Igot my Dremmel and sawes away the threads in tha bar. That way the knobs and mic holder spin independantly of the bar.
Otherwise, yeah it's impossible! :o Well asctually it would work with certain clips with plastic threads that have more "give".

But I do think your idea of rubber washers would work great. Maybe some garden hose washers will fit?

You know, I have all these tools in my garage - but could I come up with this? Nope. Jeez. Thanks, I'll be doing this tomorrow. Should be quick and easy.

MACMOONDOGGIE, tsk tsk tsk...
Haven't we gotten to the point yet, where we can be men and sign our rep, green or red? Being too big of a coward to sack up and take credit for your rep is pretty lame, but you also totally misread my post. Do you not understand the concept of smiley faces? The little winky guy in my post indicates that I'm just joking around with you. Get a clue, and get some balls. Thanks.

P.S Rest assured that my return Rep will be signed.

Yes I did misread your post- my apologies and I will return some green your way as soon as I spread some around. Go ahead and nail me if you wish, but I truly did misread what you said. :(

Dammit. Now I feel guilty! ;) Oh well. Misunderstandings happen. No sweat. I'm sure I've done the same before. Cool of you to own it, anyway. No worries, bro. Rock on. -Andy

P.S. Just sign it next time
