Step Aside Mackie, Tascam, And Maybe Even Alesis?

Give it 2-3 years or so to let the bugs be worked-out and let the price drop from list, and this just may as well replace ADATs; given the right price. Remember, ADATs started-out at $5k too when they first came-out.

I have a feeling this type of system is what Alesis just might be branching off of, if they decide/try to dominat or even stay in the "project studio" digital-multitrack game, in years to come.

That is unless of course PC and Windows based recording systems boom even a lot more than what they are now or Pro Tools is drastically dropped in price.

What do you think?
 
At those prices I will still be waiting for the adats to become dinosaurs at 100.00 apiece and like I said before I
will own a dozen.
 
I wouldn't be surprised to hear about these people getting a letter from Otari Corp. 'cause they've had a HD system called Radar out for a few years now.
 
Nope

IZ Technology developed RADAR and licensed it to Otari for distribution. Otari's license just ended. Otari is only selling their left-over stock now.
 
It is a great piece of gear,however the prices on the options alone far exceeds what I can afford at this time!

Yeah, maybe if the price drops .... but the ADAT format has such a strong foothold these days ... I think it'll be a while before anything really replaces it. This thing has some damn nice features, though. Personally, I would prefer a stand alone box for recording than trying to do it through PC or Mac, anyway. Seems to me that software/hardware dedicated to that purpose would be more stable. So, with that in mind, it's a real attractive unit. Something else to drool over ... but I'll keep my ADATs for now. :D

But if the price does go down enough in the next 2-3 years, I'll get rid of my ADATs; they'll help me pay for it, maybe.

About this type of system possibly replacing ADATs:

If these higher sample rates (96k or even 192k) at 24-bits (or even 48 @ 24) become the digital multitrack standard within the next 2-3 years, something is bound to replace the ADAT at the right price; such as the RADAR24 given it goes down in price enough from list and proves itself to be reliable by then.

Plus, you have to look at the price of $5.1kUS for 3 ADAT-XT20s to get 24 tracks, and then another $1kUS for a BRC for SMPTE/MTC sync. That's already over $6kUS (and XT20s most likely won't go down much more than that). Ok, given you're gonna spend $8-10kUS for the RADAR24 with a 2 or 3 of the options, right now, but wait 2-3 years and it'll be real close to that $6kUS mark. Not only that, but the DVD back-up drive and medium will greatly drop.

I mean unless Alesis comes-out with a 24-bit to tape and keeps the same sotra price range as they always have... Which I've heard from pretty high-up that they're not. I know they are able to do it but since they felt the tape is not reliable with 8 tracks of 24-bit (only 6 and maybe 7 tracks if I remember correctly), they came out with 20-bit instead to keep 8 tracks. Had they came-out with 24-bit instead, I'm sure ADAT would keep on dominating for years to come.

So if Alesis wants to remain in the "project studio" digital mulitrack game, they'll probably need to develop some type of HD system. Which if I remember correctly, I think they said they really don't plan to stay in that game anymore. Notice Alesis' focuses lately; joined-up with GT, even more monitors and amps, and now that tube pre.

I don't know. We'll see.
