Starting/Upgrading My Home Studio

Not quite on topic, but can you send your recorded takes to a mixing/mastering engineer? That way you'll know if it really is your chain or your skills.

Until you can define what it is about your results, no one can really help you to make it sound better. Is the vocal not upfront enough? You may need some compression to even it out and make it 'sit' over your beats. Is the vocal too thin? Cut some mids and highs. Too bright? Cut highs. Too boomy? Cut lows and lower mids. Too clean? A smidgen of overdrive can help.

Well im going to buy me some monitors and new preamp and read up on some mixing down.

Mixing down is the last step. It sounds like you're not too certain what's going on with all the steps before yet dude. Honestly, go do a lot of reading and then decide if becoming an 'engineer' is really for you.

How long have you been doing this? You said that you're not new to this...so show that knowledge to us that you have learnt 'something'.

I don't know about this guy, but i know exactly what is killing my vocal chain right now. It's my mic!(IMO of course) I have a studio projects c1. Nice mic for vocals but i'm still not happy with how I sound in it. This mic doesn't have the midrange presence(probably spelled that wrong :D ) that i'm looking for. I need a mic with an upfront sound like an sm58, but with the clarity and open sound of a condenser. Are there any non-expensive condensers (100-300 dollar range) that fit that bill? $400 and up might be very affordable to you guys but i'm not very wealthy, right now :D .

I'm trying to go for that natural but not muddy type of sound. I think i'm about done with the "hyped" pop sound! :D

re: unsigned neg. feedback,
i give advice on things i havent used because he wanted high end suggestions.

fuckhead, sign it next time.

Groove Tubes Vipre preamp - 2800.00
Peluso 2247 LE Microphone - 1700.00
Apogee Rosetta 200 Converter - 1700.00
dynaudio BM5A Powered Monitors - 1000.00

Total = 7200.00 plus tax

Sounds like a killer setup to me!

Just plug the Rosetta 200 into your E-MU 1212m and you are styling!

Would the converters on the emu mess up any improvement made by the apogee? I'm interested in this too. I've been thinking about getting a better A/D converter to use with my audiophile. I'm not sure tho. I don't wanna clutter up the signal path.

Monitors - 600.00
More mic stands - 100.00
headphones - 250.00
mics - nicer vocal mic 700.00-1000.00, misc mics 1000.00 or preamp
Booth - 200.00-500.00
PC - 1,500.00

Total 4,950.00

Okay $1,000 has been deducted from my budget. DJ Chuck T charging A G to host and mix...itll cover hosting, mixing, graphics and manufacturing and mixtape distribution (getting on iap-tv.com, mixunit.com, mixtapeallstars.com, ect). I might hafta go with a cheap setup and build up my mixdown skills and hopefully thatll give me good quality.

Mixdown skills? Honestly it sounds as if you should stick to going to what ever studio you were going to during ackward hours... or book time way in advance.

#1) It would be appropriate to start your own thread and not detract from truth_lyricists situation (ie hi-jack his thread)
#2) Try a CAD M9 Tube Mic. $299 It has a goodly amount of midrange, some nice low end and some "air". Great on acoustic guitar too. Lots of Clarity included.
#3) Start your own thread.
