hello,

I have an analogue yamaha MD8 8-track recorder
which has unfortunatley stopped working.

so my situation is this:

I want to go digital using my home PC, and I want it to do pretty much the same job as my old 8track did. My pc is fairly standard, I think the sound card is a Realtek AC'97.

what steps do i need to take to get a basic digtal 8 track home studio up and running?

budget £100 - £150

is this even do able?

any input welcome.

find out what "faily standard" means

if its like a 1.8ghz p4 or amd 1800 or better Id say next step is a real soundcard with asio drivers, those will go from 50 bucks US on up, depending on how many inputs you want sumultaneously

If you get a chance come by the chatroom and people will help you get it figured out

I'm not an expert on soundcards (or anything for that matter), but if you want to record a band (lets say guitar, bass, drums and vox) and you want to get a relatively good sound, have each instrument recorded clearly and be able to edit them as best you can, then I honestly don't think you'll be able to record on that budget.

On the other hand, if you're not recording drums, you might just be able to do it.

Setup for recording (including drums):
PC with a firewire port
Cubase or similar
Vocal mic
Drum mics (min. 4) [some of these mics could be used for micing guitar and bass amps I'd imagine. I DI my guitars, so I've got very little knowledge of that]
Presonus Firepod or similar [if you're going to record drums with 4 mics then you could probably find something smaller and cheaper, it's a case of searching around to find what's best for you]

Setup for recording (without drums)
PC with USB port
Cubase or similar
Line 6 Toneport GX or similar
Vocal mic.

I'll probably get corrected by people with more experience, but I'm just giving you advice based on what I've used or plan to buy myself. I've been DIY recording for a while now, and trying to get the best sound for the cheapest price is difficult. The less you spend the worse it'll sound.

I buy my stuff from thomann.de. They seem to be well priced compared to other places I've looked.

Hope that helps.

Well you could get something like a used Delta 1010TL and a Cheap 8-12ch mixer that has direct outs or inserts then you could record 8+ tracks at a Time for not a lot of money....

You can get a used Delta 1010LT for probably a little over $100 (I got mine off e-bay for $130 canadian) and I"m sure you can find an old used mixer with Direct outs for under $200...That and a bunch of mics and you can start recording...

Cheers
