What u described sounds more like the FireBox more than the FirePod. The FireBox (smaller) does indeed have pre's on the first 2. The FirePod (bigger - and more expensive) should have 8.
All this is pretty useless unless you buy some real monitors. You need to be able to hear an unhyped version of the recording. Conventional speakers will boost/cut certain frequencies. My suggestion is to wait, save your money. Firepod is probably a good choice, ill be getting mine in about a week =D
If you are serious about getting into this, learn to ebay. watch the going prices on stuff and if you are patient you can often save lots of money on barely used items.
Thats great, I could potentially get the FP10 FirePod myself but I'm just holding off for a bit. However I am starting to want to buy it more and more . As for monitors, deadleafecho, my house mate has some expensive home theatre speakers which I hope will do a good job, seeing as we don't use them because we only have a tiny TV. Not to sure about their freq range but I would image that they are approx 20-20k at the very least.
just to be clear, the firepod most certainly does have 8 pres. And its a pretty groovy unit. This hobby can be a real money pit to get started into, but you will reach a comfortable plateau at some point. A firepod is a good start, and you won't find yourself wanting to replace it for quite sometime. Now, your monitors, computer, sound treatment, amps, instruments...another story. Have fun!
I am truly so excited by all of this. I think I will go ahead with the purchase of the FirePod, as you said it does seem to be an expensive but solid stepping stone.
I will keep you all posted on my progress and will post some pics of the 'studio' when it all gels together. Thank you to anyone who gave their two cents as it has all been really helpful.
I have the firepod and I'm thinking about getting the Zoom HD16CD. The firepod limits where I can record because I have to have it hooked up to my computer. With the HD16CD it's all self contained and I can dump everything to my computer later for editing. It has faders, meters and can be used as a DAW. It has a lot more functionality than the firepod.
