Hello everyone, I bought a Stagg CXG Cymbal pack which included 13" hats, 16" crash and an 18" crash/ride. I want to upgrade but need some suggestions as to what to upgrade to. I'll probably be dealing with second hand off of ebay mostly as I need the best bang for buck cymbals. I think I could stretch to buying something like paiste 2002 cymbals but that is the limit. I'd have to buy the cymbals one at at time in that price range.
I cannot go to any shops to try out cymbals at the moment as I would have to travel pretty far, I also am just recovering from a nervous breakdown & so my nerves prevent me (at the moment) from travelling long distances, I would also want to get out of the shop as quickly as possible so I'd end up buying the first cymbals I heard!!

Any suggestions would be great, sabian, zildjian, paiste all have various product lines & there is too much information for me to digest to be honest. Drums aren't my first instrument so it can be confusing. I also am not too sure about cymbal size either, so any size suggestions would be great. The cymbals will be used purely for recording & will be played lightly. I'm looking for versatility & perhaps slightly darker sounding cymbals.

Here are some samples of the CXG Stagg cymbal pack. I know that when I was looking for my first cymbals it was difficult to find some idea of what a beginners cymbal pack would sound like. So I'd thought it would be nice to help in that respect. I'm pretty much the novice with regards to drums so I appologise for my playing and lack of technique. I didn't go out to play something jazzy, it's probably something to do with having to play with the orange flix sticks open full to quieten the drums for my neighbours. The other samples apart from the main drum pattern are played with Vic firth 7a sticks.

18" Crash/Ride Roll> http://www.supload.com/sound_confirm.php?get=1163702961.wma

The sound quality might be rotten as I only have an sm57 & a sm57 beta when it comes to microphones & my room needs more acoustic treatment.

Enough excuses, hope this helps :D

Aren't I the popular one. Don't tell me I've offended EVERYONE on this forum!? I can believe mabye offending 1 or 2 people/thread but this is somefin else

holy fuck batman

Oh well, I thought a lot of the help I've given out to others on HR would have been a reflected back, oh well.

I guess the silence means if you can afford 2002's get them>? I was hoping not to spend all of my money on cymbals, but hey, when you aren't given advice on what to do there is only one thing to do:

Open up a tiger beer & sit out in the beautiful scottish sunshine - yes it is acutally sunny and warm all at the same time!!

Hi

Sorry no-one got back. I just found this thread 'cause I'm looking for cymbals for my drum pupils.

How were they? Did they bend at all? Do you want to sell them?

I'd recommend Stagg DHs for you crashes. You can get the 14"s for £20.99 and 15"s for £23.99 online and I just love them!

no problem man, it's mutual

They aint broke, not yet! I'm a very soft player so wouldn't have many problems with cracking or dinks etc. They are very thin though & cheap feeling as well as sounding!! I don't know if they'd be ideal for what your looking for as I don't think they'd stand up to much abuse.

I bought a new 18" XS20 ride on ebay for £26, and I think it sounds pretty good for what it is to be honest (as long as I don't hit it too hard). I'm needing a couple of new crashes. No way I'm getting 2002's just now, I blame the credit crunch  :D but I'll have to see. I'll leave the hats for now.

Have you got any samples of the DH cymbals? I know that they (apparently) are very different from cymbal to cymbal, but a ball park sample would be good.

Here's a link to my most recent recording. I've since changed my tom and snare heads. It depens on what you like though.

These are quite high pitched cymbals, probably due to being 14" and 15", but imo they really cut through the mix. It's an almost unprocessed recording. Only slight reverb which i don't really like anyway.

Hmm, would those cymbals bend like the shitty cymbals that come with beginners kits? That's my main worry tbh. Also, your clips don't work anymore. Is there any chance of re-uploading them?

I'm offended that you haven't offended me.

:D

Didn't see your thread but I'm no help anyway....
mine are trash can lids so I'm in need myself.

I like the A Customs but have figured out I'm gonna have to buy one at a time.

bummer....

Anyway, good luck in your quest man.

SUPLOAD what a bunch of toss

sorry dogbreath, I'll try and make sure I try to offend you on a more regular basis:p

Man never using damn supload again, the files haven't exactly been on for long. My computer's dead so no longer can upload the original files & at this moment in time cant mixdown to anything!! Times are hard, seems that once one peice of equipment dies the rest of your stuff becomes electro-lemmings.

What I was trying to prove was that even crap cymbals don't sound as bad as what some drummers make out. Yes they sound bad to a more trained ear, but to a novice just starting a cheap cymbal pack will do, they can even sound ok if played correctly, they're in essence just to start with not to record with. I hear a lot of advice on this forum saying buy the best you can afford, for many other instruments I'd agree, but again other instruments are a lot cheaper in comparison to a drum kit when cost accumilates. Also, you don't hit other instruments!! Imagine spending all your money on top of the line cymbals & after a couple of beginner sessions... crack. Ouch:eek: major kick to the balls & wallet!! Perhaps this is true of the actual kit & hardware, but I have to disagree with regard to cymbals imho.

Sorry pandamonk, blame supload, if they'd have balls, I'd kick them!!

Perhaps not :o

It's ok, I've just bought a set of Paiste 101s that i found cheap on ebay. £105.99 for 14" hats, 16" crash and 20" ride, with 2 boom stands, all new and free p&p. That's the cheapest I've found those cymbals, even without the stands, so i think i got a bargain. I think she'll be pleased. :D

If you want to sell them, I might still be interested though, so clips would still be good, but just whenever you can. How much would you sell them for?

lee

I'll send you some samples when I can & when I'm ready to get rid of the cymbals. This could take some time, as everything seems to be breaking & needing replaced in my studio.

lee, impressed by the cymbals in that recording, although I like the high pitch they seem not to have the sustain I'm looking for. I don't know if the larger DH's would sound as nice to the ear but perhaps they'd be best in my present circumstances (i'm poor) where did you buy the dh's at that price? I'd probably be after a thinner pair of 16" & 17" diameter.

PS I have a laptop now!! But the connection speed is SLOVV!! It took me just under half an hour to download that sample, I'll look for the samples I made, but there's quite a few dvd discs to go though :(

The cymbals have more sustain than those recordings show, but 16" should be better. They are pretty thin too. Hope you like them.
