ST Audio? Is it an alternative

Beezoboy, don't get the St-audio for the mic pre-amps. They're useless.
A friend of mine has it, and the pre-amps are just too weak for any use I can think of.
The card itself is pretty nice, though.

I agree with that. I own a C-Port and the pre's are weak and thin. I might have thought I had a defective unit if I hadn't heard all of the other complaints (some from users on the ST-Audio BBS iteself!) IMO, the C-Port is still a killer product for the price, just use your own pre's.

Unless they're using different pre's with the other products (which they might be), I'd stick with a mixer.
 
yeah, but no. If you do enough homework and research things out, buy only what you're going to use, you can save a fat load of cash. I have no regrets whatsoever with the C-Port because I knew the pre's were crap going in. A Delta 1010 cost $200 more and has no pre's at all. It's more of an industry standard, but that means nothing to me - I'm a just a humble home-recc'er.

I waited patiently until I found a $600 mixer on ebay used for $125 from someone who barely knew what it was - did a "buy it now" and saved another bundle. It definitely pays to do your homework.
 
Well, I don't think we should to assume the pre's on this one have to be as bad as the ones on their previous gear (at least not until sombody has actually listended to it). After all this baby costs a lot more. But as sombody said its probably still not a good idea to buy it just for the preamps. :)
 
My impression from reading the ad copy on the DSP 3000 is that the same pres from the DSP 2000 (which has two of them) were used on all 8 channels of the DSP 3000.
That said,the pres don't suck.I use them all the time on my c-port.The qualifier is that if you turn them up past about 3/4 a grainy hiss becomes audible. If I need a lot of gain,I simply use the pres in my mixer or audiobuddy instead.
Consider the functionality vs the price.The $800 price on the DSP 3000 vs the $400 price on the DSP 2000 (c-port) gives you 6 more XLR ins plus 6 more pres.Perhaps that money differencial might be better spent on a couple of VTB1s,the new RNMPs or ... (fill in the blank with your fav).
