speakers and amps???

I am fairly new to the home studio concept and i am about to invest in a pair of monitor speakers to hook up to my SB Audigy Platinum sound card. I don't know much about electronics and i am not sure about whether i need an amplifier for my monitors?

Could someone please give me some advice on what type of monitors i should get (up to $800) and how to choose the right amp etc. I have been told that the Behringer Truth monitors are a good choice for starters. Is this true?
 
:) If your sound card does not hanv an amp, you will need an amp to power the speakers. Soundcard>amp>speakers. Or use a pair of self powered monitors and go from soundcard to speakers. I can't really say about the cheapy speakers........

If you are going to get monitors, then I'd get a real amp. Many sound cards don't have the punch/volume for the range of sound you will probably sometimes need.

The best thing you could do right now is do a search on this site using monitor(s) as a keyword. You ask 10 people you get 10 different opinions because sound is subjective.. The Truths are powered monitors you don't need an amp. Does your sound card have two outputs? I don't know anything about Creative products but I hear around these parts they are rather limited when it comes to recording, but that's not based on experience.

As i said i am fairly new to studio concepts. When u say two outputs i am not quite sure what this means because my soundcard has a Digital out, Analog out, 2 Line outs, and a headphone out. It also has Auxiliary and SPDIF which i don't have a clue about.

Please correct me if this answer is on the wrong track because my knowledge of these sort of things is not yet at the level that i want it to be.
 
I would get (personally regarding your budget) a pair of "active" Tannoy Revelas. The "active" means self-powered monitors. Either use the line outs (stereo or mono?) to the monitors or possibly the headphone out, although the headphone out may have a power rating that your monitors are not going to want to recieve. Make any sense?;)
 
Did you mean tannoy reveals? Thanks for the advice i will figure something out. The headphone out is already in use by my sennheiser cans but i will most probably use the stereo line outs.

Another question: Do these sort of monitors produce accurate bass or would i also need a sub? The reason for this is that the music i play and produce is very bass oriented (trance techno).
