Don't use instrument cable for connecting speakers. ;)
Right, i have come to terms with that (and lost an instrument cable in the process), can i soder on connectors to the 18 gauge speaker wire i already have, or do i have to pay those bastards at monster a buttload for a pre packaged speaker wire?

Not guitar cables. Guitar cables are designed for low voltage; voltages between wires/connectors in a speaker circuit can get pretty high, and if something arcs, expensive damage can be done.

Monster cables? IMO, save your money to spend where it will do you some good. I wouldn't do business with those jerks even if it did make a difference, which it doesn't. (FYI, google "monster cable litigation" and you'll see what I mean.)

If you are making your own, use good connectors; the wire itself, as long as it's not the really thin stuff, makes no difference. The really thick wire makes a diff if you're trying to start your car with it, but for guitar speakers, not so much.
