Damned if I do
I avoided installing Service Pack 2 on my computer for ages because I had read that many people had experienced issues with recording once they did so themselves. And then my GF bought me an iPod Touch for Xmas, and the only way I could use it was to install SP2. So I reluctantly did. And ever since then, I have experienced random crashes while using Vegas (version 5). I tried installing the newest drivers for my Layla 24/96, but that only resulted in no audio at all. Going to the restore point solved that, and the recording session I had after that attempt saw no crashes at all (but I'm guessing that's just luck). But these crashes have only occurred with Vegas.

Any advice? I'm running XP Pro, 2 Echo Layla 24/96 cards, and mostly Sony (Sonic Foundry) software.

You've only just upgraded to SP2? Egads. It's four years out of date and obsolete already.

Since the PC's already not working, I'd take this as the oppertunity to install Sp3 on it. Uninstall Vegas, install SP3, reinstall Vegas, find any patches available for it and install them, then try again. If it still fails, try running it in Compatability Mode for XP SP1 or Win2K.

I started the thread with this premise. My computer had been working fine under its "obsolete" condition.

At what point did I say the computer is not working at all? I only said I am experiencing random crashes with Vegas. Other than that the computer is working just fine. Perhaps you need to work on your reading comprehension skills.

I'll consider reinstalling Vegas, but why should I trust SP3, especially when I've read of problems with that as well?

aha! so vegas makes your pc crash too?

it could be the .Net version, when I installed Vegas it tried to find for a .Net engine (depends on which Vegas you installed). what .Net version do you have?

did you see the "report this error on microsoft" screen? if you do, did you try clicking "Yes send this error to microsoft"? it should pop an answer to your taskbar once you get a reply from MS.

also check your direct X version if you have 9.0c
or later²

use dxdiag to check your directx (this might the culprit)
use this tip if you don't know how:

Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 is the required runtime, you should be fine if u have this in your programs

here are the steps on how to check directX

Check DirectX

To determine which version of Microsoft Direct X you are running:

1.On the taskbar at the bottom of your screen, click Start, and then click Run.

2.In the Run dialog box, type dxdiag

3.Click OK.
A dialog box displays the version that you are running.

please post here the directX version that you will see in your screen.

I have ALLWAYS had problems installing XP and then installing SP2, It allways results in problems ...BUT, if you have a copy of XP that has SP2 integrated into it then the install is flawless and works perfectly....

There is a utility arround that allows you to take your XP CD and integrate all and any Updates and service packs into an ISO File that you burn to make a new XP cd with all updates allready integrated....I"ve used it and it works great....

Cheers

I was apprehensive about SP2 at first but when I finally came round, I found I have absolutely no problems whatsoever.

Is your audio PC connected to the internet, and if so, does it need to be? Although I have SP2 installed, I have all the features switched off, because my network card is permamently disabled.

You know, if you're going to write me a flame after I offer you some technically-informed advice, you can fuck right off.

Edit: And a neg-rep as well. Why, thanks for that. I do hope this serves as warning for anyone else that might be silly enough to lend you their time.

Cry me a river. If my response is in your unconsidered opinion a "flame" then you are too sensitive for the internet. Do you even know what a "flame" is? Again, I must suggest that you need to work on your reading comprehension skills. Either that, or wipe the sand out of your pussy.

For what it's worth, on the subject of SP3, I flat out will not be installing it on my computer. Full stop. Maybe on my internet and gaming PC in time, but I don't need security fixes for an audio PC that's not on the internet and could potentially ruin everything, when it's been working fine. As I said it before, it was a long time before I upgraded to SP2. I will not install Service Packs and big upgrades like that until I am positive that it won't cause conflicts, or incompatibility issues. It took me a long time to even upgrade IE7, after my dad (who was running an completely identical PC to me), had his RAID array wiped out after installing it.

And on the subject of Vegas crashing. Have you checked if there are any newer updates for Vegas? I'm sure you have, but I though it might be worth a mention. djfontana might be onto something about DirectX. But that depends how often you update windows (aside from service packs of course). I'm a gamer, so DX never slips me by, but I can see how it might for some. At the same time, I have automatic updates switched off on even the internet & games PC, and don't update unless I'm really, really bored. The only computer I have that gets automatic updates is my laptop, which is basically a sheep dip machine that can be rebuilt in no time, and doesn't hold or do anything important.

Legion - I'm pretty sure I'm on version 8 of DirectX, and that I'm on the last and latest update of Vegas 5.

I do have my PC connected to the 'net, and that's mostly because Sony's updates require it, and partly because I can't afford a whole other computer just for being online. I probably should set up a new config for when I'm just recording.

Thanks, I'll look into that.

BTW, I deleted your visitor message suggesting that I am "a miserable sack of shit." Now who's flaming?

I don't have a separate PC for recording as such. I have a dual boot with a separate install for audio. It's just easier to explain as 'my audio pc', and it functions as a different pc in that I have different bits of hardware enabled/disabled for each install (ie different soundcards, network card etc). It means that my audio install doesn't get clogged up with crap from the internet, and like I say, I don't need antivirus or antispyware even installed, let alone running.
