Oh no... don't put it like this, Alan. Now I have to get the Hamburg also. I have a B1 and a C1 already :)

Just to set the "record" straight: Here in Denmark, the prices are as follows:

SP C1 is 327 USD - list and sales price
Hamburg/Vienna are 492 USD list and 262 USD sales(!)
CAD M179 is 689 USD - list and sales price...

So you're now saying I have to buy a Hamburg as well ;)

What kind of SP marketing is that...

I have no control over the prices there in Denmark, but I know they are high, but you can always buy from Thomann. They sell for the same prices as the USA dealers do, so the C1 there is only 185.00 Euro and that includes the 16% German Tax. The B1 there is 99.00 Euro with the 16% tax. Thomann does not sell ADK so I can not tell you what they sell for. Two different mikes at two different price points.

Actually, I got my B1 and C1 from Germany when I bought them some years ago. Not from Thomann, but from another reputable dealer there. Also at that time much cheaper than in Denmark, but not quite at the US prices. And because of the EU rules, there are no issues with warranty accross the border.

I know you're not in control of the prices here in Denmark ;)

We usually take the US price and multiply with 10 to get the price in DKR, even though the exchange rate is more like 1 USD = 6 DKR. But taking VAT (25%) and transport into account usually gives a price which is in reality 60% higher than in the US.

I'd actually say that the SP prices are well in line with "normal" business, and so are the CAD prices, although a bit on the higher side. It is only the ADK prices that are lower than normally expected -- because store that sells them import them directly.

Anyway, let's get back to the B1 again -- sorry for hi-jacking the thread.

It is still very good value for the money -- dollars, kroner, euro, whatever ;)

Yes, I was going to mention this if you didn't. I understand what Dan is saying, but for 2/3 of the price, it isn't exactly comparing apples to apples.

To set the record straight: $299 is MAP on the ADK Vienna and Hamburg. A decent street price is closer to $249 and I've seen them go for less than that on Ebay, and they can certainly be negotiated from dealers for less than that. We're still talking about mics in the $200 range, and we're talking apples to apples, and I don't think a few bucks either way makes much difference.

The Vienna, Hamburg and C1 are all in the same class of mics - price-wise and sound-wise. And at this point while the C1 is still a cool mic, the Vienna and Hamburg have knocked the C1 off the top of the hill as the best mic in their price range [ let's call it $250-and-under LDC's ] and are better mics for more applications than the C1. While still having the color and "sheen" of the C1, the Vienna and Hamburg are much smoother in the high end.

One of the biggest problems with so many of the Chinese condensors is that you get harshness along with your "sheen". If ADK has figured a way around that in a budget mic, they may be on to something. Can you describe the sonic differences between the Vienna and Hamburg?

nkjanssen, yes, I do think ADK is on to something, and they are, IMO, at the top of the food chain for Chinese-made mics with their Audiophile Series. The sonics of the Vienna and the Hamburg are virtually identical with the Vienna having a little more high end. I've written some notes on them here that also includes an MP3 soundclip in the bottom of the second post.

Well, according to evilbay, I stand corrected. The last "new" one on there went for $235 with free shipping while the "new" C1s are all $199. So if you want to wait for one to show up on the 'bay, (and I would) Dan's correct.

However, I can't say that I agree that they can be negotiated from dealers for much less than $299. You might get them to knock off $10-$15, but that's about as good as I've ever done. But then again, I may not have very good negotiating skills. ;)

I could have sworn that they were going for close to $300 on eBay a few months ago. Maybe the price dropped because of the new Vienna II and Hamburg II?

Flatpicker, The Minimum Advertised Price is determined by the manufacturer or US distributor. Some good info on MAP and how it works at http://www.saxforte.com/M_A_P__Price/m_a_p__price.html

I've been reviewing gear for several years and have often included good "street" prices for the products I review.

Try this: ADK's biggest dealer in the US is http://newsoundcard.com/ and you'll often see them on Ebay selling ADK mics. Email them and tell them you've found a Vienna for $239 and could they beat that price and include shipping. I bet you'll get an email back with a better offer.

Thanks for the info and the link. A month or so back I tried buying an AT mic from a couple vendors that was going for $30 less on eBay and they wouldn't budge a cent. This and similar experiences is more or less what I was basing my point of view on. Guess it depends on the dealer and the product.

Said it before, say it again: I own one and I like it a lot. A lot better than the Rode NT1 I used before, too.
