It wasn't the only relevant part. I also said

"THe only time I can't beat them is on the doorbuster crap, that has onboard everything, no expansion, and propriatary shit."

No one here is interested in 2.8Ghz-3.0Ghz machines with 2 hard drives? Coulda fooled me.

Check here:

In this thread people are not only interested in 3.0Ghz machines, but duals.

If this were the www.soccermomsurfingthewebwhilethehubbyisatwork.com forum, then you're right. People would be very interested in the Dells that you're speaking of. That is, the integrated video, sound, tiny case with crappy power supply variety. :D
You're young, aren't you?

:D

I'm not interested in boosting your reading comprehension skills or your manners.

My sole point was that Dells will do the job for a large number of folks here, and can be purchased inexpensively. They are easy to support, and miles ahead of Gateway, HP, and the other commercial systems. IMO a modest Dell probably exceeds the needs of most folks on this board for what they do. I suspect most folks spend more time on this board, than they do in actual recording. Gear whores always need newest/biggest as a substitute for talent, or for doing anything at all other than post.

I don't know where you shop, but I can beat Dell everytime just by shopping with Newegg.com.

No doubt, newegg.com has the best prices I can find and I order from them all the time. I'm just finished (today) building a system for my guitarist(AMD Athlon 1.8 ghz, 80gig 7200rpm hd, 512meg ram, 17" monitor, gforce video card, cdrw drive 52x32x52, and a sweet chaintech case. All good components, $635 shipped. We put in a delta1010 (fantastic sound card, highly recommend) we found on ebay for $500, so the whole thing was just over $1k.

You could do it cheaper if you had to. Point is, if you don't mind going through a small learning curve, you can put one together by just following the instructions and hitting the net for advice if you get stuck or call support on the component that's got you stuck.

From now on I'll always build my own system. Try it!

Dude you can get a new 2.4 celeron with everything you had there for $599 from dell.

I think building your own computer only saves money on high end computers, or if you need specific peices.

which way should I go?

I just read through this thread and it is right where I am at. I don't feel comfortable building my own, and wonder if someone here can build me one, or advise which one to get out of the box. I am in the SF bay area.

It's main main job will be music recording, with net and word proccesing access.

I record solo and with my band. We are a simple outfit, that records in the old school style, live, with a few mics strategically placed in the room, no overdubs, or add on effects, other than a little reverb and or delay. Everything is done live on 1 track. I have been playing this way for over 30 years, with no change in the future, so I don't need a lot of horsepower that a lot of today's music demands.
I have just ordered a delta 66 sound card so I can import music from my DAT recorder, which I use to record us at clubs, parties, etc. I hear a lot of praise for Dells. Is the Delta 66 compatabile with it?

My needs are these:

1. computer and software to record/burn cd's/go online
2. cd burner in it
3. monitor (cheapo is fine)
4. keyboard

Here is my recording set up:

Cool Edit 2000(can upgrade to CE pro with a new system. my current is windows 98)
Delta 66 soundcard
Yamaha MG10/2 mixing board
Behringer Virtualizer Pro - for reverb
AT 3035 condensor mic
MXL V57 condensor mic
Core Sounds binauarl mic
Altec Lansing speakers

I live in a pretty big city that has Gateway, circut city, best buy, etc. Is it wise to buy one from these guys/on line/a package deal/ put your own together/etc. I am new to all this, and just need a set up that will last me awhile for what I do. Your suggestions are most welcomed. Thanks! Walter

PS: I use to live in Austin for a long time and flew r/c gliders on a local school hill in town. For many years, Michael Dell use to stop by and watch us on his way home. I watched his cars go from average to over the top. I wonder if he remembers me.....................

For something basic, buy from dell, putting it together yourself won't save you any money....better yet order from tigerdirect.com, they have awsome deals on their computer settups.
