The best and cheapest methods please. Is it egg boxes, toilet paper (wet and thrown on wall) or a more purpose specific solution. Any ideas?

Cheers.

your Subject says Sound Proofing, but your question is Acoustic Treatments. they're two totally different issues.

sound proofing requires thickness-density and air tight designs.

acoustic treatments included absorption, diffusion, and room modal treatments.

egg carton stuff is limited in the frequencies they handle. i'd recommend a no buy.

depending on what you're treating, you need a lot more than one type. i'd recommend the book "Master Handbook of Acoutsics" by F. Alton Everest.

For sound treating my drums I use some of the egg-carton foam padding that goes underneath mattresses - with carpet underneath on some walls and just carpet on the back walls (for vocals). I think it works fine (at least until I can get some money for studio foam anyway).
