Soundcard playback settings? Compression plugins?

I'm just getting my feet wet with computer recording and I'm just using N-track with SBLive, running an acoustic and vocals through a Mackie 408M powered mixer and into the soundcard's line in. I've just recorded a few tracks--finger picked acoustic, strummed acoustic, and vocals.

Before I begin to mix the tracks, I was wondering how I should set the bass and treble on my sound card for playback. Right now they're set in the middle. Does this produce an accurate raw signal? Should I have the bass and treble all the way up? Or maybe all the way down instead? BTW, I'm using a headphone studio monitor (one that's kind of on the cheap side).

As for the vocal levels, I've noticed that even though I keep the level well below the red/clipping zone while recording, I get occasional clipping and crackles at some places. If during playback I reduce the level of the vocals enough to eliminate this, you can hardly hear the vocals at all. I've tried using the compression on my powered mixer, but that doesn't fix the problem. Is anyone familiar with the Fasoft compression plugin available through N-track? Will that eliminate my problem? Is there a better plugin out there, or a better method I should know about.

Any help or additional insights would be greatly appreciated...I'm very much in the dark here, and you guys have been super helpful already.

Keep the bass and treble in the middle for the flattest response.

If your vocals are distorted in the recording than compression in the mix wont help. You can try a little compression on the mixer as you record but dont overdo it.

The cracks and pops could be your computer not working properly. Make sure you are using all the latest drivers for your SB and that Ntracks is configured properly.
