Hi there!
Yes, I am again looking for the right mic to do outside recordings, like capturing sound from any kind of source.
I attached some pics of one of the Lucasfilm Sound guys. Does anybody know what they are using? I am interested in that mic! Is that a shotgun mic? I want to get a mic close to that, of course affordable. Can you guys help me out?

Thanks,

M.

Those are shotgun mics.

You can get some fairly affordable ones used on Ebay -- Audio Technica and AKG make some fairly decent, affordable ones, although they're not going to blow you away or anything with their sound or directionality, most likely.

What about Sennheiser? I heard they are pretty good, too! By the way, do those mics run with batteries?

If you do a Google search on "shotgun" or "outside shotgun" you'll get results ranging from film applications to birdsong acquisition.

Although you might get the FBI kicking your door in for being a gun nut.

i cant beleive that nobody knows what this handle is! can anybody help me with a link where to buy this sucker? or just tell me what this device is called?

thx!

It's called a zeppelin, after the German airship of the same name. It's a type of windscreen that goes over a shotgun microphone. A good zep costs $260 or more, in addition to the cost of the shotgun mic with which it's used.

If you're going to do film-style sound acquisition outdoors, you'll need a boom (sometimes called a "fishing pole"), a shotgun mic, and a zeppelin with a windsock (a furry windscreen that goes over the zeppelin, $125 and up).

For a selection of mid-range shotgun microphones and accessories, check out the microphone section at

http://www.bswusa.com

Best wishes,

Mark H.

P. S. The one in your picture looks like it might be a Light Wave zep -- it runs about $450. Here's a link (scroll down to the Light Wave):

The one at the top of the page is a Rycote -- their systems run $665 - $680.

That is a handheld shotgun microphone with a windscreen. Windscreens come in various types. You often see big furry ones that I think are nicknamed possums.

Usually the microphone, windscreen, and handle mount are sold separately.

thank you so much guys! you realy helped me!
ifinally make some progress :)
