I purchased a Roland Sound Canvas SC-55 a few years ago, use it with an old version of CakewalkPro and I enjoy it, but I need to upgrade to something with more and better-sounding (especially bass) instrument choices for the various sounds I want to create. Do YOU have any recommendations as alternatives? Rack-mountable perhaps, although not necessarily. I'd like samples rather than synthesis and something that would handle backing a wide range of styles from folk, rock and true orchestal.

Check out the Alesis qsr 64-voice Module.
It has 640 programs and 500 multitimbral mixes. The module contains guitars, drums, bass
brass instruments, strings and winds. What I like about it is the Sound Bridge where you can even import your own samples.

Thank you all for shedding some light on the subject! Now I feel muc better prepared to visit the music store! It's great having an intelligent starting point!
