sound card/software upgrade

i am going to upgrade from cool edit 2.0 with a creative extigy to some software that comes with an interface. i am thinking steinberg or pro tools. any recommendations would be helpful. i would spend as much as $1000.

Emagic was bought by mac and the last pc version is/was i believe 5.5 .. there's still support for logic on the PC but no new versions developed...
(and imho there's simpler sequencer out there that perform the same as logic)
