Ok guys here we go NewB here>

Can anyone tell me what I would need a Sony DAT in my control room for? Also anyone have an Idea of how much these things are worth with the remote included? It supposedly has less than 30 hours on it. I am being offered one VERY cheap, however I really don't know why I would need it, thanks in advance for your help

Unless it's 24 bit and you don't have a decent computer interface, there is no need for one.

I have two DAT machines from when they were used everyday in my studio. I haven't turn one on in 5 years. And that was just to play a tape I have made 10 years ago.

Digital tape based machines are worth almost nothing, especially 16 bit ones. I have about $10,000 (original price) worth of these doorstops in my place.

Basically, if you don't know why you would need something, that's a pretty good sign you don't need it. :D

Back in the DAT days I owned a couple of them as well, and I couldn't be happier that they are no longer a necessary piece of gear.

^ agreed.

When everyone was busy jumping on the DAT bandwagon I was sitting there going "boy does that thing make my cymbals sound like crap"

It's really old tech, there's certainly better options to be had. Unless you really need a doorstop.

Again thanks so much for the responses, I bought a huge box full of cords from an old guy that sold his studio, he had this DAT hanging around and was trying to get me to take it off his hands for cheap $50.00. You guys helped me say no and I appreciate it. Thanks again.
