Song for the Girlfriend at Christmas

no problems with the bass on my system, and that's with the 'bass enhancement' button on.

guitars sounds great. those lead guitar lines (acoustic and electric) are unbelievably cool. The runs you do on the acoustic in the beginning of the song are sick (i just learned to use that word properly from my neice who's twelve).

One thing on the vocals. And I'm not sure if this will help or not, but like Sabbath said, some of your choices for notes fall outside of the tertian chord underneath it all, which I personally love to hear happen. It might jump out less if there was more support for the oddball. For example, at some points I thought I heard you sing something like a 7th up from where the root of the underlying chord in the song was but there wasn't much support for it underneath so it jumps out, not to mention it's hard to nail a note like that without some audible guide. Don't take that comment too literally, cause I don't have your song at my disposal to really analyze it correctly right here, but that's the idea I had when I listened to it earlier.

I think your girlfriend will like the present. The day I bought my guitar, I serenaded my wife and she instantly forgave me for spending so much money on an instrument that I didn't really know how to play!

Thank so much fellas!

Hey guys thanks a lot. I'll try to respond in more detail later. But I listened in the truck to the harmony ideas I laid down yesterday after work, and some are indeed not very good. Actually some are quite out of tune (that middle part) so I'm going to need to pay more attention to headphone levels etc as well when tracking.
I'm going to post a version without the middle harmony in just a little bit here. It's just aweful as it is. :D
Thanks again!

-Edit- I posted this without the harmony in the middle. I like it a lot more solo.

hey Tom, I don't think the harmony was necessarily the problem.. I think it's the melody, or the note choice.. I personally like it, but it's still as I said earlier.. This is not a light song, and that middle part is my favorite, but my earlier comments would still apply.. I wouldn't sweat it because judging by the responses, not too many people notice.. this is a great tune, but pop song is not what comes to mind..

Really fine tune SLuiCe!
Guitars are sweet, and the harmonies are great!
I dig the writing,very cool vibe,fits the music to a T.

I enjoyed it very much,thanks!

Here's wishing you and your girlfriend a great holiday!

jake-owa - Thanks for the sound check man. You done downloading yet? One of those files has a virus that will instantly attack your microsoft outlook and feed your dog cat food and your cat dogfood and...well, anyway it's a nasty virus.

No kidding...so you probably haven't heard a note of Sam's new tune yet then? Don't bite me Sam...
Thanks Chris :D

Guernica What does "Guernica" mean?

Wow man, thanks for checking out the older stuff. That's Rhythms and I agree, it's got a sailing flow to it as it should. I'm probably going to re-record that one now that I've learned a few things. Thanks again!

Couldn't agree more! But she's got an imagination and is musically adventurous so I'm hoping it strikes the *right* tension....because it makes the relief that follows more sweet.
Thanks so much for the time!

You and yours too Pete!

Great song SLuiCe! Totally different from your usual and I like it. very nice vocals....it's cool to hear your more natural voice. i didn't really hear any note selection that was too far outside for me.
Excellent guitar ride........nice bass line..........and I like the drums.........i even like that dbled snare.

very, very nice man. Hope you have a great holiday! :)

I dug it. My wife dug it (she walked in as I was playing it with a smile and said "whats this?"). The funniest thing she said was: "if I get too quiet--I'm just thinking about the great things you do"---"which means, 'I'm just a guy and I'm probably not thinking about anything!" (her Venus interpretation, I assume)

But then she said "I love this stuff!" so, yeah, I think you are safe! :D

I agree with Sam about that one vocal harmony--something is amiss there to my ear. Also agree with Sam about the echo snare. It would be cool as an effect once or twice. The effect itself is that of a drummer playing a snare flam.

I dig your acoustic guitar sound--full, yet airy and clean. Do you use a real light pick when you record?

This has nothing to do with this song, but I was thinking how I'd love to hear you write a straight out R&B tune and just sing the hell out of it. I think it would be spectacular.

Lt. Bob Thanks for the listen Steve...I was tempted to hit you up for a sax ride...but damn, I need to do a few a guitar solos now and then to stay in shape :D

Ya that's pretty much right though. ;)

I agree with Sam about that one vocal harmony--something is amiss there to my ear.

If you have time I'd like to know which line...I thought I removed the "harmony" in question yesterday...I still hear a few spots that could use retracking, but time is limited.

This has nothing to do with this song, but I was thinking how I'd love to hear you write a straight out R&B tune and just sing the hell out of it. I think it would be spectacular.

Believe it or not, I've got a few ideas down already on my mini recorder...just haven't got to that one yet :)
Thanks Al!

Oh ya...light picks on this one...most of my playing actually.

Just a great song and the acoustic guitars are EXCELLENT. The Guitar solo at 2:40 (or something) could be a bit more clear. It sounds muffled in contrast to the clear acoustic guitars. Not TOO muffled, but a little bit. And it's only my opinion. This is a great song. Could work in a radio too, but still not too pop. If she doesn't like this then I don't know what :D

No other problems, and I'm being overly critical now anyway... Merry christmas. She MUST appreciate this.

Updating file with the delay dropped from the snare track..

And thanks for the ears Cranky!

I wasn't really trying to say that I thought this was actual pop. It's just got a much happier vibe than I usually record. I said I could use help in the pop department for a song to help bail me out of an argument. ;)

Ahhh... gotta love that christmas drunkinesss =D (I'm pretty much wasted... uhm... oh yeah... ööö)

Love this tune man

I listened to this when you first put it up, and let it kinda soak in for a bit. First off, this song is beautiful and very well thought out. Now please don't hate me for saying this ( I have much respect for your work..your awesome) but that little change at around 2:10..your vocals really seemed..hell i'll just go ahead and say it, "off key". I listened to it three times, and it still sounds off key in that whole change. I wouldn't say a damn thing if I didn't care, but this tune is so good, and i just had to nit-pick something:D . Btw, when that acoustic solo first opened up, i thought cool he's got Lt. Bob on sax..really the first few notes sounded like a sax!

Anyway dude, this is one very cool song and don't hate me for the nit-pick. Your girlfriend should be proud of this. Merry Christmas SLuiCe.

I dropped the offending line!!!

:D

I listened to this today after a couple of days off from it...and you guys are soo right. I guess I thought I needed that there...but it sounds much better to me with just guitars!!!

We can let this thread go unless something else is really bad. (You could PM me too).

Thanks to everyone for your patience!!!

David No need to tip toe around me. I hear it all the time :D Thanks brothah!

......what does SluiCe mean?

.....It's better now without the offending line....
......... but youve committed a crime.......

.....I now know that you intended for something to go there ......and now Im missing it:D
There's a big fat hook hiding in a cavity chiseled on the inside of your skull........  :D ........and one of these days it will dislodge and make itself known to you...........

........:D ..reading this back, i realize i spend way too much time here.........:D :D

I Really dig this song!!!!

Hehe that may be right Mike.

But I'm already close to posting my next song...so ahh...

let this die now eh?

:D

I wish my computer had a breathalyzer that wouldn't allow me to post when I'm above the legal limit..

anyway, the snare drum sounds 1000x better!
