I've read the Sonar newsgroup over at news.cakewalk.com the last week trying to make a decision if I should jump or not (using ProAudio now). This topic came up and someone answered with a method that he and the other participants seemed to prefer over freezing that Sonar actually supported. I don't want to have to find that thread again (it's to lively there) and as I'm not yet a Sonar user I didn't memorize it. But it was in the last few days if you're really interested (I think deja has it).
Sorry to be so vague - but it sounded important to you and I'd feel bad if I didn't give you the lead.

I'm guessing the function is bouncing down (which is the only thing Sonar supports when we talk about freeze), but that involves a lot of work. Logic and Cubase do this automaticly, and it's so easy to use!

it only takes 3 clicks in SONAR. Here is the recipe (from Scott Reams)
1) Select MIDI/Audio tracks for DXi.
2) Edit/Bounce to Tracks, unchecking all boxes... using the DXi audio track as the destination.
3) Disable softsynth in rack.

Try telling them in their forum. Some developers used to show up in the newsgroups. So I expect it to happen there too.

And while were are making suggestions, why doesn't the mute button stop everything working in the track? For quite a while I thought muting was a way to minimize load on the CPU, but apparently the plug-ins go on using CPU power.
I know it might take a little longer to mute/unmute and perhaps be audible during playback if several plug-ins are affected. But whether you want that or not could be selected in "preferrences".

No, the Archive function (right-click on a track, and select Archive) does minimize the CPU load. Muting a track will only stop the sound...tombuur said:

I think I prefer it as it is. I only start archiving when I know I'm not going to use the tracks or I'm getting dropouts.

You can spend your time reading manuals or just get the job done with some basic features, knowing there is probably a smarter way. Still, now and then you discover an important feature, you have overlooked, and add it to your personal repertoire.
