Hi all,

I'm starting to use my Sonar 2.2 software for eq'ing and adding effects to some of my recordings I do on my BR1600CD recording unit. The problem that I have is exporting the file. I've actually had this problem for quite some time, and I believe that it requires an mp3 encoder that must be purchased separately.

Are there any mp3 encoders that I can use that are freeware, and if so where do I need to put the application in the cakewalk files to get it to activate when I want to export a project?

My understand, and I may be wrong, is that anyone providing mp3 encoding software has to pay licensing fees for EVERY COPY they sell. If that's true, of course, no one's going to be able to legally give away free encoders, and that's why cakewalk doesn't include it free. I don't think there's any way to "plug in" mp3 encoding into Cakewalk other than buying it from Cakewalk (which is downloadable for ~$20 on their site, I believe).

Well, at least you got that part right. :)

It depends on the encoding algorithm used. Fraunhofer does require royalties, whereas Lame is open source and does not. There are many free mp3 encoders available on the web. Did you read the link I posted?

okay, i've read the link and now I remember downloadin cwenc. It worked when I first installed it into the correct cakewalk folder (although I've forgotten what folder that is), but upon my next computer startup it didn't work. I'll see what I can do tonight with the info in the thread once I get home from work
