ok so i was thinking about getting some mics to put into an audio interface to record onto my computer, but then it struck me that i will need a bass drum mic plus the other 2 and the interface only has 2 inputs so i was thinking that i could get a mixer and then plug that into a single input interface. will that work and would i need to get a DI box for that?

thats how i currently record my drums. 6 mics into the mixer, pan the toms and cymbals through the mixer, and run a L and R out to the 2 inputs of my tascam us-122. it takes A LOT of trial and error, but you can do it.

Sure, that will work. Obviously you have to really focus getting the levels right on the mixer prior to recording the tracks, especially with drums.

What interface were you thinking of?

yes, the mixer will provide you with more preamps for more microphones. but it will sum your signal to a stereo signal...so you won't have as much control afterward. Not a big deal if you don't mind doing it that way.

And no, you don't need a DI....a DI is for stuff like guitars.

right. you dont have much control. thats why it takes a lot of trial and error to get all the levels right. but it can be done and sound good. if you get a clean recording thats close to what you want, you can do minor tweaks with EQ to bring certain drums out more.

pearlnpaiste - plan on recording about 50000 test tracks to get your levels right in the mixer. also plan on moving your mic's around about another 50000 times. actually, it is a pain in the ass, but youll also learn a lot about mic placement and how room ambience affects your sound.
