Some rather disturbing new RNMP information

jiz-like sound?

Well someone had to say it! Let's hope none of us associate a taste with it though! ;)

Filler, heh.....tube, I would love to have an MP20 as my main pre!

There's a reason that pro studios are about the only places that have $2k pre's...think about it. It's also a good reason to go to an actual studio. You might also get to plug a $2k Neumann into that API or Neve.

IMO, getting into this kind of gear is past the threshold of just trying to record your music well. If you're more interested in a Neve than a Gibson, then its more about the recording and less about the music.

Last I checked Dole, this was a recording forum...not a music forum. :D

Just kidding. Music is more important than how its recorded but alas we live in a competitive world and if you are to make it at any level you need to have a quality recording in hand. All the more so now as the "means of production" are more available. The public (at the 20- 50,000 albums sold level) is not so forgiving when it comes to bad audio quality. But I agree with your general sentiment: a good song is a good song if its sung into a tape recorder and sounds good on playback.

C7us...a bourbon flavor pre would be something like a C12 into a 1960 or '69. Joe Meek would definitely be pistacio. How often do you hit pistacio ice cream?? :D :D

joemeek must be creamy chocolate.

ok so $2000 for four channels of rnmp. WHo the heck is rnmp anyhow.

Or $2600 for 4 channels of tried and true vintech.

or $2200 for 4 channels of focusrite red

or $1500 for 2 channels of Amek neve

Ok basically the really nice mic pre is in the same price range as these hard hitters.

The sound of it better be freaking really nice , or else what's the freaking point.

Why the heck would anybody want to buy a ,gosh, brand spanking new fmr mic pre, with all the hype associated with all new products, when they can get "the" sound for the same price.

Man, its like comparing an Alesis reverb box to a lexicon
or freaking comparing a shure mic to a neumann.

All I am saying: For the price they are charging, it better sound like a $2000 preamp. AND even if it does, why should I buy it, when for a little more, I can get four channels of tried and true quality.

Not that I am even thinking of buying a preamp that expensive anyhow.

yo, tubedude. Have you ordered the preamp comparison cd. I think you need it. You might find some great bargains in there

When you get right down to it, $1100 for one channel of 1272 is not bad. Has anyone used the 3405 neve pre? ...listed for a mere $850...

It just does something to the sound that just doesn't work with music. YMMV.

what the heck!!!

DId i hear some people dissing joemeek?

MAn , no lie. I have heard a c414 through a joemeek or a rode mic through a joemeek sound better than a u87 through a neve.

And I am telling the truth.

Joemeek ROCKS

and I can bet a vctwinq that it will sound better than ANYTHING in that price range and even in a higher price range.

WHat the heck!!!

I just bought a vc6q 2 weeks ago and I'm glad I did. It's my only pre so I can't really compare it to anything, but I'm quite sure that there'll always be some use for it even years from now when my 'mic-pre cabinet' will be full of Neves, Great rivers and Manleys ;).

No disrespect intended...

...but the first thing that came to my mind after reading c7's acronym:

TwinQCS = Twin Queer Crotch Sniffers

I guess I could have gotten a little nastier with the CS but there it is! ;)

The new Melencamp album cut last month just used 8 VC1QCS to record the entire album with. I think that one will go platinium. The new Take Six album just finished mixing, and was all done on a Joemeek. No one can say their vocals suck...

Sure, Joemeek is not for everyone, or every application, but then again, nothing is. So those who say they suck, I should hook you up with the producers who are cutting these major acts on Joemeek, perhaps you know something they don't, so maybe they could learn a few new tricks from you.

Weather the user likes its sound is another story, but like all gear, if you don't like it, it does not make it crappy or makes it suck. The Meek is a good value and will hold its own in any studio.

The Truth Is...

Any pre or any mic or any gear... Will hold its own given in decent enough hands, and/or in a decent enough room, and/or on a decent enough instrument, and/or... The list goes-on...

Of course, I'd like to see how my DaviSound TB-1 and the "Mic-All" pres (from the TB-6) in my TB-3, hold their own next to ANY pre; but ESPECIALLY in the $1k area and below range; whether it be a Meek or Envoice or dbx or ART or Mackie or Sytek or Presonus or etc.

BTW

That was just my dumb acronym...I have no clue if Joe Meek is good or not.

It could well be the proverbial Cat's Pajamas and it could well suck me sideways (actually that sounds pretty good too).

;)

Hey Weston,

You up for some shoot outs? Let me know. I got lots of studios here that will do them. Of course we would be right back to the opinion thing again, but I have done shoot outs with all the big boys toys, and the Meek.

In fact, we are cutting two songs right now, each 60 seconds long. There will be two versions of them, one with music, and one totally solo. We will use the Neve 1072 and 1073's, a Manley Voice Box, A Focusrite Red, a custom Dan Alexander Telefunken mod, and a Meek VC1QCS.

All the mics will be Studio Projects. Each Studio Projects mic, the C1, C3, and T3 will do each mic pre on each song. It should prove interesting. We will make the results available on CD, or downloads.

There will be no winners or losers, just what they all sound like on a CD.

Any chance of hearing this comparison on MP3?

BTW, what's Alan Hyatt gonna use when he has his own line of mic pre's to pimp?

Each Studio Projects mic, the C1, C3, and T3 will do each mic pre on each song.

Hey, I've seen pornos like that...

;)

Hell Yeah...!

I sure be interested in that! Call it a "Comparison" rather than a "Shoot-Out" and you've covered that it is clearly for opinions so there are no "winners" and "losers". So what/when do you have in mind? In fact, I'd prefer makin' a trip down there with my girlfriend or something rather than send'em on their way in the mail... Heck, it'd be nice to be right there in the studio for it... Just to hang-out! Besides, I've been wanting to take a trip down to Ventura to visit the 'ol stompin'-ground and this would be a good excuse!

So, I'm sure as hell up for it if you really are?!

And Maybe...

ametth could come hang too so I can try and convince him to move-up by me to start a studio together!
