You know the Yamaha Subkick? It looks like a woofer inside a 12" drum with an XLR mic jack that you put in front of you bass drum to get that super low end. I was hanging out at a friend's studio (I won't drop a name, let's just say he's a very well known, well respected drummer.) and noticed he had an 8" woofer in front of his kick drum mounted from a cymbal stand. I asked him if it worked and he said "yeah!" So he showed me how he hooked it up and I decided to try it. I had an old woofer and soldered a cabe and XLR jack to it and sure enough, you add it to the mix and phoom! Low end galore! Use your regular bass drum mic for the attack and mids and let this fill in the rest!
The trick is to reverse the polatiry to the XLR connector. The speakers + should be the XLR's - . (Screw the sheild of the cable to the frame.) Otherwise you get phase cancellation. Very hot output too, so don't add too much!
Have fun!!
