I've been recording guitar amps for years, and I now want to try out some of these amp modelers, such as Guitar Rig, POD farm, etc. Do I need a special interface, or do I just record a DI guitar and then put the VST on it afterward?

I've got Guitar Rig 3LE and it works pretty well, except that I'm missing the wah since I don't have a floor controller. I like the sound a lot more than Amplitube, which is really crippled in the LE version. Guitar Rig gives you enough choices that you can actually use it--of course, they tease you by letting you use the whole package in demo mode, but who needs much more than a Fender, a Marshall and an Ampeg bass rig anyway?

Just the VST on a DI track will work, but in order to use POD farm, you have to have a Line6 interface. The toneport, for example. You don't have to use it to record the DI track if you have a different interface, but the toneport acts as a dongle for the POD farm program.

I use guitar rig session. It only costs $149!!!! And it comes with Cubase LE, Guitar rig essential and a high quality audio interface, plus it also comes with kore player and the sound pack 'pop drums'.
I was so chuffed with mine that I made a video in appreciation, showing what it can do;

I have pod farm platinum and overloud TH1...

I use Pod farm for vocal pre amps and when recording acoustic but TH1 craps all over it for tone with guitars imo

Ive also heard great things about guitar rig 4 pro...Ive tried GR3, didnt like it all that much compared to what I own..

Amplitube have a great deal on where its looking like you can get four for the price of one (fender is highly rated)

+1 for AcmeBarGig. Great hi gain / metal amps with interesting names, like Dickhead
They are working on a complete Guitar FX suite.

you'll know them from just down the road in Hamilton then?

the Canadian metal pack made it onto the Brit Computer Mag DVD give away...shame that's them stopping amp development now :(
