So, what are you working on?

The last time I really "worked" on anything was a year ago. I posted some clips in the mix clinic that were received warmly ("...this doesn't even sound like music." :laughings:)

The year since then has been spent completely overhauling my entire set-up.
Ultimately a lot of learning and practicing vs. writing.

And then there's real life. Which involved graduating highschool, stressing over college. Ripping out carpet and installing laminate flooring. And switching from part time to full time working.

I have been working on stuff though. Mostly in stem form into my little voice recorder or little bits into DAW projects while learning them. I'm finally at a point where I'm getting back into the swing of things and can quit letting the piled up gear distract from making music.

I've got some new drum sounds recorded that I want to upload here to get some feedback on (not sure if I should put them in the Clinic or the Drum section). Just gotta find my old files to compare them with.

I was working on recording a bunch of songs my high school buddies and I wrote back in junior high/high school.
But the guitarist and my best friend who was having back problems finally went to a doctor who actually did his job and we found out he has a mass on his spine, and a lesion on his lung..... its cancer and it has spread......fucking sucks!

Damn :(

Cancer is terrible. My grandmother who lived with me was diagnosed back in 2009. Completely turned life upside down. Chemo cleared it within a number of months, but she was never the same after that.

Best to your pal.

Rebuilding my studio and upgrading gear. . . Last year's heavy rains in the Northeast caused a water seepage and mold issue in my otherwise normally dry basement room. . . Had to haul all the gear upstairs, tear out two walls and re-drywall. . . I should be sanding right now, but I'm still having my coffee. . . Laziness has set in today. . .
Bought alot of new gear as well, so I'm reading alot of manuals. .

Built a couple of new racks to hold the additional outboard gear. . .

Currently I'm in the pre-production stage of my next several projects- - My own overdue "greatest hits" album (they're really just O.K. hits, . . maybe they're just O.K. and not hits at all, IDK . .)
And my other upcoming project is in ring-tones. . . looking for voice actors and other unique vocal artists willing to work for free. . . It's not easy to find free talent. . .

I'm closing on a new house in 2 hours, so I'll be putting together a new studio over the next couple months. I havent done anything lately cuz my shitty rental has no space to set up anything. 3/4 of my studio is in storage... SOON I will be back in the swing of things.

I've been paying the price of having too many songs, catching up with technology and trying to unscramble eggs.......
In a nutshell, having worked out how to get all 8 tracks simultaneously out of my Tascam 488, I've been transferring the songs into my DAW and mixing from there. As I have 2 of the same machine, I've also worked out a way to mix in sections. Makes life so much easier. It's my "poor man's automation" ! :D
I've also been working on tracks I've recorded over the last 3 years on my DAWs. A number of the songs are complete but I need to get the old portastudio ones mixed and out of the way before I tackle the 'newer' ones. I've lived with them for so long, I'm not sure I can listen to them but.........hey, finished is better than perfect.
In between backing up and arranging on the hoof recording sessions, musically, life is very full. The sessions have to be ad hoc because the friends that sing or play instruments are here there and everywhere and all at different times. For instance, a mate who plays the drums is over from Zambia {we hadn't seen each other for nearly 3 years} and doesn't know when he'll hit England again, so he's good for a few bits and bobs.
I guess I do something recording wise pretty much every day but it doesn't feel like the pile is going down.........until I count how much actually has been done.

Hey, that's great. Looking forward to following your New Studio thread. Will you have a basement??

Not much recording here for the past few months.
Got back into another band, learnin covers and gettin fluent on the bass again.
Got a decent sized show comin up in mid June (about 6000 people :) ) and it looks like we're gonna do just fine.
nice.
We were supposed to open up for Warrant and Skid Row but a contract snafu said uh uh. So we've got 2 prime time slots to fill on Friday and Saturday.
Got a couple of people gonna record it but not sure about how the audio will be.
meh...we'll see.

I envy anyone that has been able to record ANYTHING, especially if you've gotten to a point of completion. Seems like my schedule doesn't let up, though I will say I'm mostly to blame.

The day job at the doctor's office keeps me busy 5 days per week. I left the good paying show band gig at the beginning of the year because of excessive travel. I just pink-slipped the local cover band I work with for numerous reasons, giving them an opportunity to work out all booked dates through the remainder of 2012 if they'd like or any time everyone can agree on. I have a three piece that I put together last night to handle a local venue's open dates (the venue owner is a friend)...gonna be fun, but probably won't be able to do much with it after year's end if things go as planned. I'm wanting to switch over to more solo gigs, as I've been playing 2-3 of those per month since September and have enjoyed the challenge of singing and playing solo. Though used sparingly, the loop pedal and vocal harmony device can come in handy when needed. Though some may scoff at the idea, I'm looking to be using some backing tracks for some gigs by year's end. (Thanks for the insightful wisdom, Bob).

I'm getting rid of the automotive projects ('67 Rambler American & '87 Suzuki Samurai crawler) so I can spend more time on music and family. We're preparing to do some finishing & renovation in our basement, including a designated recording area with some room treatment. Certainly looking forward to that. Don't know squat about making a good sounding room, though. The challenge will be to create an area that can be used by family when not in use for music. I totally have the best wife ever.

Just finished relocating my recording gear in our home to a spot that allows me to do more. Just started working on demo material for some local agencies. I'll be posting those soon enough in the mp3 forum looking for some feedback. It's going to be cover music, some cheesy stuff even, mostly geared toward wedding & special events...but it's what pays well. I'm thankful for the work I've had since leaving the show band. It's been a good year to try my own thing.

Tracking Bigfoot

Been tracking the next Bigfoot and the Prehistoric Dogs project. The main instruments are direct and they play live together monitoring through the PA system for that live feel with no bleed. We only have six days with the guitarist/vocalist so all his parts have to be done in that time. I've got direct boxes before and after the guitar amp simulator in case I need to reamp. Tracking vocals and acoustic through a Peluso ELAM.

This is shot through the control room door. You can see the Klipsch LaScala (PA version) with the mid-high horn cabinets stacked on some EV PA speakers. The EVs point back at pedal steel and bass while the LaScalas aim back at the guitarist.

Working on a 5 banger for a band called King Snyder. Just have 2 songs left to track the bass, guitars, and vocals on.

What have i been working on? Nothing really. As usual. I swear to god my biggest mistake in life was getting a real job.

...so, what you up to right now? I haven't seen a couple of the regulars around much, and the MP3 Clinic seems to be in a rut lately. Where the hell is Greg? Ido? Supercreep & LPC?

Anyway, I got a new TASCAM us-800 from Jimmy about a month ago, and I can't believe how it's changed the way I work and the ease and speed it gives me. I used to have to record everything into my TASCAM 2488, and then transfer the files into my PC to mix in REAPER. I often hesitated to re-track something because of the steps I had to go through. I probably convinced myself what I already had was good enough on more than one occasion.
Now, it's just press RECORD and there it is.

The ironic thing is, it's actually taking me more time to record now, because I don't settle for something that I might be able to make even just 2% better. Because of that, I'm taking my time and really re-working parts and experimenting, which I wasn't able to do as freely before.

So, now I have 4 songs 90% finished. Before, it would be too much of a hassle to be working on more than one project at a time...too much transfering files, etc....

So, what are you up to? :)

I'm kind of new here, but I'm working on learning how to work all the different components to get something started so I can get it done. I had an 8 track studio years ago, and I got rid of it because I felt bad about never getting anything finished (4 songs 90 % finished in perpetuity). It will probably be the same thing this time around, but I've decided to give it another go and if I don't finish anything that's fine too, fuck it. Other than that I have been enjoying the tone thread as it got my guitar working + DAW + multi+tracking + bouncing + etc started. I'm doing drums next, then synths. I figure I'll finish a song within the next 6 months -1 year, and then it should go pretty fast after that. I must add; it has been nice to make youse guys' acquaintance here.

Been trying to get my new toy...my MX-80 2" tape deck...overhauled, aligned and installed into the studio rig so I can start using it.
I have several songs in various stages of tracking/editing/mixing...and at least another 5-6 that I just started tracking on, just drums and scratch tracks....so I'm like so behind with the music part as I've been working on the tape deck the last few weeks, but I don't feel bad when I break from the music, if it's because of studio maintenance or new gear and that kind of stuff. It's sometimes a PITA breaking off the music part to deal with gear stuff...but I figure in the long run it's positive thing.

That's about it... :)

Did you decide which light bulbs yet?

The key is to learn when to say, "That's good enough" and move on.

It's that desire for perfection AND the belief that everyone will hear the slightest flaws that often leads to nothing getting finished.
Or if it DOES get finished ..... it's sterile and uninteresting because it's been perfected to death.

Me? When I'm finished with something I'm finished. I don't revisit it ..... don't remix it ..... don't retrack anything.

You can always do "just one more mix" ..... "just one more take".......

Yeah I've mixed my new album like 10 times. That's a lot of unnecessary work for something that no one is gonna hear. :laughings:

Did you decide which light bulbs yet?

That was decided well ahead of the discussion that happened here, as I had already purchased the bulbs....which sorta made that discussion a moot point...but I guess some folks felt very strongly about arguing in favor of doing a LED conversion. :)

These are not identical to the stock OTARI bulbs, which were frosted glass and a bit smaller in size...but these are much brighter, I guess because of the clear glass, and they were a pinch longer, so they j-u-s-t fit in the small, available space at the base of the meters.
The machine looks great with all the bulbs working.

Here a picture that Ghost put his famous "wallpaper" finish on...though the VU meters have more warm, golden incandescent glow than comes across in the picture. ;)
