Reason being, I had like $30 in my paypal account. So picked up a Superlux 218A for $25.

haven't had a chance to use it yet; anybody fool around with one? I figured I'd find a use for it somewhere.

By the way, I've got a D112; I was going to try either on both kick and the old fliptop Ampeg bass rig. I figured that if the low roll-off at 100hz was problematic for kick, I could just use the superlux on the bass. should let the D112 punch right on through-or vice versa.

Well give us a clip when you use it. Would be interesting to see if its a revelation :D

well, no clip yet, since I'm in analog world, but it's not a bad mic. It's actually sort of similar to a '57 with a little more low end response.

It claims to have a low freq. range to 20 hz, and it does, but it starts to slope off a little below 100, signifigantly below 80. It's got a little peak around 3-4k and then drops off pretty signifigantly by 10k.

Pretty decent signal strength, pretty smooth. Not too spikey. I'd say it's not really ideal for kick; might be better on a bass cab or even guitar cab; it'd be real good for a harmonica mic. snare maybe, as it is pretty 'fat' sounding.

Useful mic, more of a jack of all trades than a master of anything. But hey, for $25, a useable mic is a useable mic.

methinks Dr Chessrock is not a fan ... or he's found a lo-fi use for computer mics on kick.

I seem to recall from another thread somewhere that Chessrock's favorite kick mic is a Labtec AM-242. Or was that Blue Bear? Dang can't remember.

That one might actually be over the $25 mark, so comparing it to the Superlux might not be an apples to apples kind of thing. :D

Or maybe it is.

it's maybe like comparing mass-produced GM apples to ones where the farmer actually cares how they look and taste.

or like mcdonald's and your mum's sunday roast. they're both food but only one of the miserable cooks is being paid £2 an hour. oops that's different altogether.

No....after reading that thread I went and got the Labtec for 10 bucks at Office Depot. It ROCKS on kick. does pretty good on djembe too. Adds some nice color.

EV 664

I thought this might be interesting for those on the ultra-budget looking for a kick mic. The Electro Voice 664 can be regularly purchased on ebay for 35$ or less, and I picked one up on an “impulse” buy (mostly because it looks really cool). I was kind of surprised at how it performed on kick…Here's a link to 2 recordings that feature this mic on kick.

http://www.nowhereradio.com/teainthesahara/singles

Both tunes were recorded in my rectangle shaped one bedroom apartment with low ceilings (you can hear the refrigerator humming I the back in the beginning of ‘Before’ – heh heh!); not the best acoustic environment for recording drums, but oh well. The kit was a rented Tama Rockstar, played with a felt beater. I put the 664 about 2 – 3 inches from the beater (inside the kick) for “Anna”, and about 4 – 5 inches back for “Before”. If I recall correctly, I did a 3db cut around 400hz on the kick on both recordings. Totally budget, but I think I got my money’s worth out of it…

Now this is what I'm talkng about, guys.

Quit wankin' around with crappy $25 computer mics, and hop on ebay and get a deal on a real one. Jeezus. That's only 10 bucks more teainthesahara paid, and he's got a real mic, now.

I got my at pro 25 for that much...I like it, I want another for my floor tom.
