Snare compression

Mixing and Mastering.
What is the norm when compressing the top snare mic track in comparison to the bottom snare mic track?
Would you use the exact same settings to gel the 2 tracks together or does each track need a seperate attack time and threshold?

Normally, I'd recommend just sub'ing the two to one track, and then compress. If there actually was a "norm," then that would probably be it.

Not to say that there would be anything wrong experimenting (with different comp settings on each) ... you might come up with something interesting / useful.

If I were to compress I would comp them seperately in order to acheive what I want at both mics to blend together. Or if they already sounded right and for some reason I wanted to comp them, I would do it like Chess said.
 
depends on the raw tracks that are being mixed...i've used a little compression on just the bottom snare and left the top alone before, comp'd both, comp'd neither...just do what sounds right i guess
 
I was experimenting with that once, and I got a really cool sound for a jazzy thing I was playing by putting a really fast attack and longish release, and relatively low compression on the bottom, and leaving the top pretty much alone. I'd post a clip but my external HD died... argh, 120GB of downloaded music, all gone....
 
in my (limited) experience, you can usually get away with way more aggresive settings on the bottom depending on what you are using it for. i have no problem getting the attack and body from the oh's and top snare, so the bottom is heavily compressed to enhance sustain of the snares, not so much the actual hits. you can get away with some 8-10k eq a little more that you could with the top because of the lack of hh bleed.

yeah, i saw the date before i posted. i read old stuff all the time. or maybe someone else that was new like i was a few years ago can come by and read it.

or is that a dumb idea?
