Small diaphragm hyper-cardioid...is there one?

Anyone know of a small dia condenser with a hyper-cardioid pattern?

Octava MC-012 with the hyper cardiod capsule.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is "hyper-cardiod" exactly? Is it where the normal cardioid pattern is narrowed a bit.

I know the MXL603S is supposed to be "super" cardioid, with a wider pattern, so that's the opposite of "hyper" cardioid, right?

And while I'm asking questions - where the hell did the word cardioid come from anyway? I understand the pattern, but is it some vague reference to it being a heart-shaped pattern? - ie. cardiac?

Cheers

Well, you've got one out of two: it's not a condenser (but it'd still be a good choice, regardless).

No, the term Supercardioid refers to a mic with a narrower pick up pattern than Cardioid, but wider than Hypercardioid. The 603S has a Wide Cardioid pattern (bordering on Omnidirectional).

And yes it is some vague reference to it being heart shaped

Do you suppose it must be a little tougher to make good sounding tight pattern mics than the wide-cards? I don't recall hearing about great budget SD Hypers'. (?)

Think of hypercaridoid as a cross between a figure eight and cardioid pattern. The result looks like a figure eight with the front lobe being bigger than the back lobe.

In practical terms that means the hypercardioid has better side rejection than the cardioid, but the cardioid has better rear rejection. This can also be important in live sound applications depending on where the floor wedges or other monitors will be located relative to the mic.
