All of my life I have known what the best workhorse for dynamics are, sm58's. But I am redoing the sound for a youth camp affiliated with my church and they really can't afford to get 5 new 58's. They need to be durable, but cheaper, any suggestions?

Well, SM58 is a good bet on here, but you could also consider the AKG D880 instead. Not sure if they are more expensive or cheaper o'er there?

We're using a bunch of those for our church also. Maybe not quite as durable as the SM58.

You're sure you could not afford the SM58 on the basis that they may last longer?

Another alternative to check out is the Sennheiser e815S. MF has a three pack deal that includes three mics, mic clips and mic bags for $100. The e815S has an extended top end, milder upper midrange bump, and less proximity effect on the bottom compared to the SM-58. They have a slightly higher output too, probably because of the neodymium magnet structure. They also have an off-on switch. They're a very good mic for low $$ IMHO. And, they aren't knock-offs... they're real German-made Sennheisers, FWIW.

I second the Sennheiser e8x5's, although the e835 is probably closer to the SM58 in quality and price.

The SOS review on the E835 likened the sound to the SM58 plus the missing top end. The Sennheiser E series mics are awesome value for live sound, IMHO, although I'm having very little luck with them for recording.

Musicians friend has a package for 3 Audix OM2s' for $199 comparable to the 58 in sound and durability.
