Sm57

One last thought: anybody looking at these mics should pony up the few extra bucks for the Beta 57, which has the great benefit of having a threaded grill, so you can swap for the ball at will. They are also just better mics, in my not too humble opinion. I think I had 6 or 7 Betas at one point . . . some of the 57s had the ball, some of the 58s had the 57 grill. And I had extra balls in case I needed to go all vocal for a show. Nice and interchangeable.

while doing factory service work shure was one of the companies we did... and while we didnt see alot of capsule replacement (why rebuild a mic for $80 when you can buy new for $90) i still would peruse the partslist etc ocasionaly and IIRC the same capsule was speced for both mics... or i'm having a brain fart...

I believe there are different parts numbers for the capsules as they include the grille of the 57 whereas the 58 would not. Unless you were disassembling those and replacing internal parts

They are different part numbers and this could very well be attributed to the grill difference.

I always liked the fact that they were a bit different from mic to mic. Its one of the main reasons I kept particular ones from my rental P.A. system when it sold.

Then that brings us back to the 'old vs new--is there a difference?? ...But lets not......

As for measurements....Of the four 57's I have here at the studio right now....Two are around 12 years old...USA assembled both at 232 ohms....One Unidyne III...approximately 25 years old at 248 ohms....THE ONE...a Unidyne III also 25 years old plus...best sounding 57 I have ever heard by a long shot....289 ohms.

There ya go. A few extra winds on the bobbins here and there and what'dda ya get.

Silk purse.

I have a 57 and it's my least favourite mic - I bought it because it was "industry standard" but I guess my standards are too low or something.
1st mic of choice MHS 1
2nd Sony ECM 19b
3rd La Grange Dynamic
Like I said - I'm Lord Lowbrow.

There was one question on the Shure knowledge base where somebody asked why older mics sounded better, and they got really pissy :D

Seems random to me too. When everybody started raving about 545s I picked up one, cheap. Probably too cheap. It was a thin-sounding dog. I gave it to a school for their PA.

I looked for a Unidyne IV for a while, but then gave up. I should get one of those . . .

Maybe my ears aren't as educated, but I've got a 545s that I love on my amp. About 2 months after I picked it up, I found a Unidyne III SM57, and it sounds just like the 545s. It'd be kind of nice if they added more variety to my locker, but heck, I'll take two good sounding amp mics.

FWIW, I don't have a current (or recent) SM57--just the two old one's mentioned above. So that's all my ears know. Who knows, if I had a more current 57, maybe I'd think the 545s was thin too. (Hmmm, I think I'm talking myself into a NEW 57--purely for science, of course :D)
