MD421....well.....350 bucks is not as easy of an impulse buy. :p

I'm afraid that if I buy one, I'll try it out on a tom and it will sound so good I'll never be happy until I buy 3 or 4 more of them to replace all my 57's when I'm recording drums.....

Maybe one of these days. ;)

Sounds awesome on toms, I like it better than sm57 or e609 on guitar cabs as well, it sounds the closest to how the amp sounds in real life.

57 + e609s for me

the e609s might not have the 'meat' in this case at least, but i love how smooth and clear it is. ive found the best combination for the bands ive recorded is mainly e609s with a little 57 thrown in. in a tight mix the e609s really stands out and gives me the sound im looking for--blend in 57 to taste. too much meat can work against you.

I certainly wouldnt mind having an i5 either--sounds good to me, and they all have their own little flavors...but one of these days ill have that royer r121. :)

Major pooh,
I just bought, against my better judgement, a 57. I've only toyed with it a bit but I'm not too crazy about it.
Hearing your comparisons a couple of time I like the i5 recording better - not as middly - then I am wearing h'phones in a vain attempt to avoid amp colouration.
Oh well, another variety of mic for the collection.
Cheers

Oh, & then I find you've osted another mic. I'm like Devo's dog in Rome.

I like them both.

How about a comparison of them same mics on a snare?

I like my mics to be versatile if possible. I already know the 57 is pretty darn good sounding on a snare.

well, to make you feel a little better...every bar, club, studio, etc. in the WORLD uses sm-57's for something or other, so there's nothing wrong with your judgement

i might be able to get some clips of both the 57 and i5 on a crap-ass snare tomorrow, but we'll see...it's looking like a busy day. shit, i didn't even post the guitar samples that i was going to yet!

I've had a problem with an SM-57 on the snare: the pointed black plastic grille isn't as strong as a normal metal grille and occasionally wild sticks hit the mic, and the end comes off. If a few off-target sticks hit the i5, do you think there would be much damage? I know they say it's dent resistant, but that may not include a hard hit with a drum stick.

I have a 57 that the grill cracked in half.
I have no clue where to buy new ones, so it's rigged w/ some electrical tape.

assuming the internal components of the i5 can withstand a stick hit, then they should take the abuse just fine...the mic capsule is solid metal, no plastic BS

I'll be slapping that i5 on the snare for an upcoming session. We'll be trying out a couple different snare drums too. I'll put up some clips afterwards.

I think I like the 57 better.

That is an awesome guitar sound by the way.

I'm pretty partial to the 57 myself, but I like them both.

And thanks!

Hey Metalhead I just bought a Audix i5 on Saturday, so this is a cool thread as I also have a couple SM57's. First your guitar tone is great, I personally like the clipped of the Audix i5 a little better, but depending on the type of song, I might perfer the 57, both are good.

Would you (if you can) be willing to post some pictures that show exactly the mic placements you used when recording the clips. It would be much appreciated. Any way thanks much, great useful post.

Well I don't have any pictures on hand, but I could take some tonight.

If a detailed description helps for now...

The mic was pointed straight in, on axis with the speaker. About 1 1/2" from the center of the speaker (about where the dust cap meets the cone) and it was about 1" away from the grille.

By the way, I tried out the I5 on a snare drum this weekend and got the best snare sound I've ever gotten. (May not be saying much  ...... :D )
I'll post some samples of that when I get a chance.
