SM57 question

I've been lurking for quite some time, but I've decided to try to attemp some home recordings - so I picked up a used SM57 at a pawnshop for $55 w/ the bag, but no manual. So I'm curious as to the reason why the screen of the microphone spins around? Also, does the brand/type of mic cable make a noticeable difference when going straight to the sound card (I don't have a preamp yet)?

The end is supposed to spin. Also, you really do need a preamp with any mic. Some consumer grade sound cards have a wanna be pre onboard be I'm pretty sure you'll be very disapointed with there performance.

Yeah, it's a cyclotron. It's used as a partical accelerator in which charged particles (as protons, deuterons, or ions) are propelled by an alternating electric field in a constant magnetic field.

Is there any reason why it spins?

It spins because it's loose and I can't for the life of me figure out why Shure would market a mic for so long and never address this. What's really bad is when using one live for acoustic guitar, the guitarist gets too close and accidentally touches that loose screen with the vibrating guitar strings - the most loud, obnoxious, sound I've ever heard (second only to the sound of a banjo ).
