Setting the record straight for what?

Are we going back to albums previously though great sounding and now finding them "not so great" because the guitars or snares were recorded with a 57?

Nope... Shit mics can be used to record great music... I never said anything about music sucking because shit mics were used to record it...

Setting the record straight regarding the "sm57 mic" as it pertains to what it is... A mic! Not the music. Some people are partisan to it. In my opinion, it sounds about a tab better than my unisphere 1.... maybe.... That's just a fact. I would never recommend the 57.

used carefully, you can do everything with it, but that's just too much work, get some cheap condensors too and you're set.

I have a lot of dynamics that I think are better mics in a general sense (MD-441's, etc) but the 57's have their place. They're just different, not inferior.

In the end you'll find out that the Beyer M201 does everything the SM57 does, only a lot better.

And while we're at Beyer, the M88 does everything the SM58 does, only a whole lot better.

And yes, they're much more expensive, I know and I know why.

Although better sounding mics can surely be had, isnt one of the popularity points on the 57 (and 58) supposed to be that they are one of the easier mics to mix?

Same with NS-10's: Far from the best sounding speaker, but one of the better ones for getting a good usable mix on.

I never use the 57 because mediocre sounds are not easy to mix, great sounds are much easier to mix.

And the NS10 can sound very good, but you have to work very hard to make them sound good and even great.

One advise: play 'The Patient' by Tool, form the Lateralus album on NS10 monitors and find out that they can really sound very good.

I like the 57. "It's just another color for you to paint with..." That's the textbook answer, right?

Really though, I like them on toms, I'm sure I'll move away from them at some point, but I'm not too pretentious to say they are shit. To say that is a pretty broad statement considering how many great sounds have captured.

I do really like them on toms. I know where to point them and get a good sound. Sometimes on guitar cab, but I have better options and I like a condensor on cabs a lot. Can work for snare, as well as any mic can in a way, it's all about placement. I tend to like an LDC on snare.

I've made and heard some great recordings using only the 57's, for every instrument including voice. I think they're great.

I like the SM-57 plenty but since trying the Beyer M88 on my amp I think I may never go back-

With a 57, it's all about the preamp... Through Mackie Pre-amps, it's nothing special... Run it thru a nice neve Pre and tell me it sounds like shit, and I'll give you a quarter. It's a good mic.. Just like you wouldn't use D112's as overheads.. there are some applications you wouldn't use a 57. I like 'em

I never got the SM57 until I plugged one into a $2,000 mic pre and shoved the mic into the grille of a guitar amp. And, it matters about the input impedance on that mic pre as well. It helps if it's got a selectable input impedance.

Through a low end pre, the SM57 pretty much sucks. For the people with low end pres, condenser mics get the nod as the mic pre does not matter as much with condensers as it does with dynamics and ribbons.
