Hi all

Recently bought a new SM57 from Amazon.co.uk. It came from a legit music store.

The cap, (top black grill type part which also has the silver grill on the very top) moves very freely when touched. can just keep infinately moving it round and round.

All other SM57s that i've used the black part doesnt move at all.

The mic works great, but i was just wondering does this sound faulty?

All my 57s have a top that spins around like that. (I'm pretty sure they're supposed to be that way :) -- maybe the tops on your other ones are stuck?)

Cheers man. Sounds as if its fine.

Not bothered about the other ones, they we're borrowed :D

An SM57 with a top that doesnt spin round is either fake or broken

I gather its so that you can set it up at any angle, then rotate the cap so the SHURE logo is always showing to the musicians/cameras...

Just a quick update on these SM57s with the non spinning top.

I spoke to the engineer who i borrowed them from. Mentioned i'd been on here and people confirming the top should spin round like on the one i own. He agreed with me/us and openly admitted that the 4 i borrowed from him were in actual fact fakes.

He didnt know when he bought them BUT pointed out the differences and admitted he should've realised seeing as he bought 4 for £80 quid off some guy on ebay... just to give you and idea, my 1 real SM57 cost £60.
Enough said!

Never the less these fakes did the trick for the quick demo i was compiling and i have no complaints, although i'm glad i'm in possesion of a real one anyhow.

Cheers people!

Any deal where you can get multiple brand new 57s for a really cheap price on ebay are probably fake. Both me and a friend of mine bought 3 packs on ebay and all 6 came up fake. Thankfully, I got my money back and traked the dude down to ask why he sold me fake mics.... he said he didn't know they were fake. Total B.S.... He had that same auction on ebay every week for like a year. He had mass quantities and was making mass money on them.

FYI - always use credit card on ebay. If something comes up fake and ebay won't help... at least you can dispute your charge.

Strange that there's not a peep on the shure.com site on the fakes issue, at least not that I can find.
