Returned from the dead
ok so an sm57 is the industry standard of dynamic mics for use on a wide variety of sources.

but what would be the industry standard of condenser mics if there is any one mic to choose?

Well, there really is no such thing, as condenser mics come in so many different types for very different uses. But- that said, there are probably more Neumann U87's and more AKG C414's stuck in front of more stuff in more studios than anything else. And frankly, I believe the industry standard dynamic is a Sennheiser MD421. An SM57 is what you use when you don't have a 421.-Richie

MD421, SM7b, and RE20's are priobably used more than a 57.

I wouldnt go as far to say that...while those others are going to be prefered...Ill stilll have to assume that the number of SM57s in use in recording studios would still be more than all other other mics combined since you can pick one up used for arround $20...I know Im sitting on 7 of them.

I'll take 5 @ $20

you get sm57's for 20$

god and to think im about to pay 100 for just 1 of them :(

Just buy them used.

theres no used sm57's that ive come across here in wichita. i saw one on craigs list in the past 6 months and it was going for 60$

i think im gonna make a trip up to kc sometime soon and go on a used gear shopping spree or something.

If you want a cheap 57, go here:

http://www.speakerrepair.com/mm5/me...Code=genem&Product_Code=37-206&Category_Code=

They're pretty much the same thing for 1/3 the price. If you don't believe me, head to WhiteStrat's shootout and listen to the clips.

i respectfully deny your suggestion.

if that was really an sm57 *in disguise* then why in gods green earth would people still be spending 100$ a pop on the shure brand?

i wish life were that simple cause then i could spend the other 70$ on some cheap bitches and hoes... oh well. thanks though.

Did you even listen to and compare them before deciding this?

look im sorry but im not gonna spend any more money on *quick fixes* and *look alikes*

ive spent alot of money on cheap gear and its gotten me nowhere but in a hole with nothing to show for it. so in my personal experience i feel its best to just go ahead and get the real thing instead of beating around the bush.

theres a reason that people say that the shure sm57 is the industry standard and that most studios wont be found with out them.

if the mic is JUST like an sm57 but 70$ cheaper then why would the name "shure sm57" even be around anymore?

So no you didn't then? Suit yourself. I personally don't take offense to you saying you're not gonna buy one. Just trying to offer a suggestion. Just because something is cheaper doesn't mean it's a "quick fix."

And FWIW...I thought the GLS es-57 sounded better than the Shure SM-57 on the shootout. Personal preference, I know, but I think people are selling them short by refusing to at least check something out.

glad you didnt take offense cause none was intended. im just sick of spending money on chances. the sm57 WORKS and its been proven over and over again and i just wanna get something that i know is gonna work.

i do appreciate the suggestion.

Maybe because of folks like you? :D

Seriously, I hear you--the SM57 is a workhorse, tried and true--I know, I've got 3 of 'em. I've also got three of the "knockoffs" they're talking about. In fact, I'm the guy that did the rather extensive shootout that solaris mentioned. (By the way--it's a shootout of 6 different mics, including a ribbon--so it might be interesting to you even if you're not interested in the "other" 57s.)

Bottom line is this: I like 'em both. I use 'em both. They're not identical--the midrange bump in the knockoff isn't in the same exact place. I've got over 70 mics--from really cheap to really expensive (for me anyway), and knowing what I know right now--if I had $100 in my pocket and needed to mic some cabs or toms, I'd by three of the ES57s instead of one SM57. (My three "knockoffs" are always in use on my house drum kit.)

Sometimes I know it's smart to buy the real deal and not screw around with imitations. But sometimes I feel a little bit smarter when I beat the game and win with a killer deal.

So by all means, start with a "real" 57--you need to see for yourself what the legend is all about. I'm sure you won't be disappointed. But when you need three more so you can leave a bunch in place on your toms or multiple guitar cabs--be dangerous and try the ES57s. You won't be disappointed with them either.

And if you are, look me up. I'll buy 'em from ya!

Never mind. I just saw that if you saved $70, you'd spend it on "bitches and hoes." Do the ladies a favor and spend it on a mic instead.

Don't you mean you're Shure he won't be disappointed? :D

I know, I know...terrible pun.

ha. i figured you might have had something to do with it.

and im more inclined to believe YOU over some (seemingly) random people cause im bettin you know your shit better than us noobs, but lately my luck hasnt been to great with the cheap fixes n whatnot. i just feel that i need to upgrade my gear piece by piece with tried n true equipment so that way i can know for a FACT that i suck and its not just my crappy behringer gear and knock off mics :D
