If you get to KC Ill show you where to shop....Do you know Jon Butcher from the Jon Bucher Axis? he used to be an 80s shreader and he was giving private guitar lessons in Witchita last time I heard of him.

Craigslist in the Austin area always has about a dozen used SM57's or SM58's for sale at any one time. Although they tend towards $60 used. Sometimes $40 if the ball looks like it got ran over by a truck.

I picked up a used Audix i5 for $60 and that should be the only dynamic that I need for a while. I even picked up a windtech windscreen for it. While it's an odd color (the only one that they had for the i5 at GC), it's noticeably better than the sock that I was using.

For $100 new, you could do better IMO. Although part of the appeal of the SM5?'s is the quick turn around if you need to sell them. Or the availability of them should you need an extra on short notice.

Its a real crapshoot...I recently bought a suitcase full of mics for $125 from a pawnshop...it included 3 SM57s...12 SM58s...a Senn MD421....and an assortment of other mics by EV....BeyerDynamic...Shure....etc.

It could be years untill I get another shot at that kind of deal....7 years ago I found 4 SM57s and 2 SM58s for $20 each at another pawn shop...and an SM7 for $80 all in the same place.

eh to me just about anything on craigs list in kc is a deal cause wichita is pretty much dead. im gonna take a few hundred up there next weekend and go nuts. maybe ill be able to bring some stuff back and sell it for a pretty penny.

To answer the OP, the KSM32 has been earning its title as the "SM57 of condensers." That is if you're looking for a mic that has a comparable performance/price.

To anyone who would risk the quality of their sound to save 70 bucks not to mention buying chinese BS mic's will obviously hurt Shure who's quality they CAN'T match; You're a total IDIOT. This mentality will eventually put Shure out of business and we'll all buy our shitty, poisoned, chinese mics from walmart. Thanks!

One last thing!!!!! In case you haven't noticed the SM57 is a world class piece of equipment!!!! 90 dollars for something like that IS CHEAP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wait a minute...you're the guy looking for samples of a KSM32 in another thread, and here you're calling it the SM57 of condensers. How can you know that if you haven't heard it?

But then again, how can you know we're IDIOTS for buying cheaper mics without hearing them or their results? I've got some of those knockoffs (thanks for calling me an idiot, BTW) but I'm not telling anyone not to buy a real SM57. I'm saying lots of different things have their place, and sometimes, a really sweet deal comes along. And when that happens, and you can back up the claims w/evidence, sometimes it makes sense to check out that sweet deal.

I've got a number of real Shures, including numerous vintage models. I'm not giving 'em up any time soon. But that doesn't mean I'm gonna close my mind to another potentially useful tool just because it's cheaper.

So let's see...you've got 5 posts and I've seen you in two threads. In this one, you're calling people idiots. In the other one, it's jerks. You're off to a good start.

PS: 3rett--I disagreed with you in that other thread as well, so you better hurry over there and call me something...

You got me WhiteStrat. You're the best, I'm the worst, you're awesome, I suck! I mean this is what you're after right? This is obviously where you've made yourself king in your life. An internet forum. Posting thousands of times more than me makes you infinitely smarter, cooler, and everything else way better than I could dream to be huh? I guess maybe I should accept it and beg for your guidance in life as well as recording.

I love how you think that just because I signed up today, that was when I started engineering audio, as if this forum is the Alpha and Omega of audio and your the god that resides within. What I know about the KSM32 is and was irrelevant on my other post. I am/was here simply to expand on that and confirm some loose ends. I'm certainly not going to take mic advice from someone who thinks a 57 is too expensive and buys chinese knock offs by the way.

Just keep your head in the sand and make sure to ridicule anyone else you can who joins this forum to forgo expanding their knowledge so you can remain god. Also you can see that I didn't call it "the 57 of LD's" that's what professionals are calling it. Did you notice the quotation? They ended up in your quoting of me. If you looked outside your forum kingdom you might know that.

PS. GET A LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Again you can have the last word. You've ruined this forum for me..........

i think i know what yourtrying to do, but your going about it all wrong. being the biggest baddest asshole and calling people names is kind of a bad way to help people and you need to calm down.

whitestrat never insulted you or belittled you in any way and you here calling him an idiot n shit just for disagreeing with you. strat knows what hes talking about and know that when you come here just throwing random facts around you best believe someones gonna call you on it and it just so happened to be him.

being an asshole to someone just for disagreeing with you isnt the best way to make friends ya know....

i do appreciate what you TRIED to do.

Common rebuttle used by thousands upon thousands of Internet wannabe-cool guys. Drop it, you aren't the first to use this poor defense, and as far as defenses go, it is poor. Ad hominim anyone?

I'm certainly not going to take mic advice from someone who thinks a 57 is too expensive and buys chinese knock offs by the way.

He never said that. You're justifying his point.

I think you were the first to call people idiots or jerks. Just saying....

PS. GET A LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!

And yet you are here on an Internet forum, defending yourself.

If you want a cheap 57, go here:

http://www.speakerrepair.com/mm5/me...Code=genem&Product_Code=37-206&Category_Code=

They're pretty much the same thing for 1/3 the price.
I don't argue with that 100%, but be aware that for specific duties there can be a pretty obvious difference. I posted a while back in this thread. There's a rough sound file linked in there from some vocals. I think that's an area where there's a pretty significant difference. The bandpass or bite that the ES57 has may help on many instrument tracks, but IMHO it was a bit too gritty for studio vocal use. Still like the idea and will be hanging on to my three anyway.

Take Care
